A cool character in Breaking Bad exists only because an actor missed a shooting day

Film and series productions do not always go as planned, and many problems must then be solved with improvised solutions. In the iconic series Breaking Bad, there was also such an incident, but this created a well-known character that is now indispensable.

Which role is meant? Jonathan Banks, also known in Breaking Bad as “Mike Ehrmantraut”, plays the problem solver, hitman, or ruthless investigator in the series, but he actually wasn’t supposed to appear at all.

The reason for his appearance was a sudden incident that prevented another actor from appearing. For this reason, the writers of Breaking Bad were forced to create a workaround, and thus Mike Ehrmantraut was born.

Tight-lipped, cold-blooded, and perfectly made for the role

What kind of incident was that? Rhea Seehorn (Kim Wexler from Better Call Saul) participated in an interview on “The Rich Eisen Show” and revealed details about the production of Breaking Bad (via YouTube). According to Rhea, Mike wouldn’t have existed in the series at all. In season 2, Jesse Pinkman’s girlfriend actually chokes on her vomit.

However, in order to dispose of her body, Saul Goodman should have actually been called, but that couldn’t happen because the actor playing Saul was not available at that time. A solution had to be found, and that’s why the writers decided to create Mike Ehrmantraut – the problem solver of Breaking Bad.

This small change had a big effect on the series of Breaking Bad as well as Better Call Saul, as Rhea continues. Saul would have had to “dispose” of Jesse’s girlfriend’s body in a cold act, like Mike did in the episode. This would have completely changed Saul’s character in the future.

But Rhea and Rich Eisen are glad it turned out this way, because Jonathan Banks brings to life a character that fits perfectly into the mold of the cold-blooded hitman.
