What kind of banknotes are these? 0-Euro banknotes are regularly issued in the EU by various organizations. Since 2015, more than 2,500 different models have been issued in 30 European countries. These are commemorative notes that are released on certain occasions.
The latest zero-euro note, which is set to be circulated in July 2024, depicts the landing in Normandy on June 6, 1944, whose 80th anniversary was recently celebrated. However, the special edition is limited to 3,000 pieces.
Commemorative notes are not legal tender
What can you do with them? Nothing. These banknotes serve only a commemorative function and are not legal tender. Therefore, you cannot use the notes for shopping; instead, you can hang them on your wall or display them in a showcase.
Like thematic coins from tourist attractions, the note is a collector’s item made with the same techniques as any other euro. The banknotes are produced by the bank in the same way as any other euro.
You can purchase these banknotes either directly from the manufacturers or at various museums. Depending on the note and rarity, usually between 3 and 12 euros are charged.
Who is allowed to issue coins and notes in Germany? The Deutsche Bundesbank issues German euro and commemorative coins. The federal government, represented by the Federal Ministry of Finance, is responsible for special commemorative coins and so-called gold collector coins.
The official banknotes are produced in eleven high-security printing works in Europe. They are then delivered to the various national central banks. The volume is controlled and regulated by the European Central Bank.
