In Dragon Age, it often happens that one encounters familiar characters across the installments. Many fans are therefore hoping for the return of a specific character, but this has not happened in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Former lead writer David Gaider explains why that is.
Which character are we talking about? We are referring to Fenris from Dragon Age 2. The white-haired former slave from Tevinter has captivated many fans. He is one of the possible romances and has a certain aversion to mages. As Hawke, you accompany him in the story of Dragon Age 2 on his personal quest for revenge while you turn the city of Kirkwall upside down.
All other characters with whom you could have a romance in Dragon Age 2 have reappeared in other installments – only Fenris has not been seen since. So why not him? With his striking design and his mystical aura, he remains one of the most beloved characters in the series. However, this very design seems to be the reason for his absence.

Simply too expensive
What is the problem? Former lead writer David Gaider and creator of Fenris shares his origin story on the platform BlueSky. He also addresses the fact that it is very unlikely that Fenris will ever appear again in a Dragon Age game.
The problem is primarily his design. Even though the Lyrium tattoos are an interesting concept, they make it simply too expensive to bring him back into a game. He needs his own model just for the tattoos, and that is simply too labor-intensive and costly to give him a supporting role again.
However, he also has some comforting words for fans who wished to see him return: Since he was unable to bring Fenris back in any Dragon Age, he wrote a book that was supposed to continue his story. However, this was “fortunately” rejected, as Gaider wanted the elf to die in it. This way, he can at least continue to live with an open ending.
A character in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the latest installment in the series, was also part of Dragon Age 2 and played a role in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
