In the world of League of Legends there are many dangerous forces and threats. The Ruination
was one of the worst disasters in Runeterra to date. A champion is solely responsible for it and has sealed the fate of many souls and an entire region.
Which champion is it about? After the king of the long-forgotten realm of Camavor had died, his firstborn son was to take the throne. The younger brother of the rightful heir was Viego. Due to the unforeseen death of his older brother, he was appointed king himself.
Viego was never meant to take the crown and lived in pure luxury, which made him complacent and selfish. He showed little interest in his new position and had neither the desire nor the talent to rule. However, as king of Camavor, he met the seamstress Isolde and dedicated his life to her.
Viego was blind with love
While Viego did everything for his beloved Isolde, the nation under his rule grew weaker and weaker. He did nothing but shower his queen with gifts and riches, forgetting everything else in her presence.
His allies were boiling with rage and devised a plan to change things. They sent a group of assassins to depose the king, but the poisoned blade was deflected by his niece Kalista and struck Isolde instead.
The poison took effect quickly, and she fell into a stupor. Viego watched as his beloved Isolde slowly died and became increasingly hopeless during the process. He used his wealth to try to save her, but to no avail. Viego secluded himself with Isolde’s corpse and over time became filled with hatred and violence as his empire descended into chaos.
The trailer for the 2021 season of League of Legends shows the power of the Ruination:
The secret of the Blessed Isles
Viego desperately wanted to save Isolde. He sent Kalista to find a cure, and she came across the Blessed Isles, where there is a spring of healing water. After Kalista successfully returned from her mission, she found her uncle mad and broken next to his deceased Isolde.
The water could no longer save her, but Viego did not want to accept that. In his madness to resurrect Isolde, he marched with an army to the Blessed Isles. He struck down anyone who stood in his way and finally reached the inner sanctum and the spring of healing water.
Isolde was laid in the basin, and as she came into contact with the water, her corpse rose. Viego succeeded and finally saw his beloved wife and queen again. However, Isolde rose as a terrible spirit from darkness and wrath.
Filled with rage, pain, and confusion as to why she was awakened from her death slumber, she took Viego’s enchanted sword and drove it through his heart. The magic of the water and the sword combined, causing a tremendous explosion, and a dark mist swept over the Blessed Isles.
Viego and his realm were forgotten
The dark mist transformed all living beings into tormented undead and turned the once Blessed Isles into the Shadow Isles. The mist was named the Ruination
and remains one of the greatest threats in Runeterra to this day. Viego and his realm of Camavor have been forgotten, and the Shadow Isles claim new souls day by day.
How did he return? In 2021, a novel by Anthony Reynolds was published that is part of the official lore of League of Legends. In “Ruination: A League of Legends Novel,” the author describes all the events surrounding the Ruination. The Chain Warden Thresh was the trigger for Viego’s return after he had gathered the destructive energy for centuries and finally brought Viego back from a realm in between to Runeterra.
Since his return, black mist has been pouring from his broken heart, consuming anyone who stands in his way as he searches for his beloved Isolde.
Besides Viego’s terrible deeds in the lore of League of Legends, there were also several issues in the game with the King of Ruination. After he was only playable for professionals in tournaments several months later, Viego caused a number of bugs due to one of his abilities: LoL: One ability caused the release of a champion to result in him not being playable by professionals for months
