At the World Championships in League of Legends, there have already been two officially confirmed bugs. Now the YouTuber Vandiril has uncovered a possible additional error. However, this could have negatively affected the results of an entire group and eliminated a favorite from the tournament.
What is this error?
- The bug occurred according to Vandiril during the match between GAM and Top Esports on Saturday. In minute 40, Top Esports was about to win the game and was already attacking the Nexus.
- Levi, the jungler of GAM, used his Ultimate as Karthus, causing damage to all four attackers. However, Vandiril noticed that the Maw of Malmortius, an item on Lucian, did not activate to mitigate the damage.
- As a result, Lucian died faster and could not destroy the Nexus. GAM, in turn, dismantled the Nexus in a counterattack and won.
If Top Esports had won, there would have been a tie of three teams and further decisive matches. Rogue might not have qualified for the playoffs so narrowly.
Top Esports could have progressed to the knockout stage without the bug
What exactly did Vandiril find? In the tweet embedded above, the YouTuber explains his find:
- Nami took 930 damage from Karthus’s Ultimate and had 96 magic resistance
- Lucian took 924 damage from the ability and had 100 magic resistance
- However, Lucian had the item Maw of Malmortius. It has the passive effect: ‘If you would take magic damage that would reduce your maximum health below 30%, you gain a shield that absorbs 350 magic damage for 5 seconds (90 seconds cooldown).’
Lucian should have been able to absorb 350 incoming damage and thus have 450 health points left. According to Vandiril, this additional health would likely have been enough to survive the incoming damage from Sett and continue attacking the Nexus.
You can watch the situation again in this video. It is also shown that the item animation does not activate (normally a purple shield effect):
Why is this so crucial? Top Esports finished the group stage with three wins and three losses. This was only enough for 3rd place, resulting in the actual title favorite being eliminated before the quarterfinals.
Rogue and DRX, on the other hand, finished with four wins and two losses, taking the 1st and 2nd places in Group C.
If Top Esports had won against GAM, and the rest of the day had played out exactly the same, there would have been three teams with the same result, with each having won against the others once. There would have been a tiebreaker among the three teams. Top Esports would then have had the chance to eliminate Rogue or DRX from the tournament and advance to the knockout stage.
Top Esports could even have lived up to the favorite’s role.
No public statement from Riot yet
What does Riot Games say about this? So far, there has been no statement from the developers regarding Vandiril’s accusation. However, this would not be the first bug at these Worlds:
- The champion Orianna was already disabled during the first week of the group stage. There was a visual bug causing the animation of the ultimate to trigger not only under the ball but also under Orianna herself. Vandiril had also discovered this (via Twitter).
- Additionally, Vandiril found a bug with tower aggro in the game Fnatic against EDG (via Twitter).
There are many memes on Twitter and Reddit suggesting that Riot Games is already afraid of Vandiril. While these memes are fun, the situation is serious. On Reddit, user Bigdonger writes:
If this was indeed a bug, it would be a big problem for Riot. Lucian was within AA range when he had dropped to 97 HP.
The number of bugs this year has been criticized by many players. They now hope that Riot Games will provide a thorough statement regarding this.
What do you think about the bug? And how would you react if you were Riot? Feel free to share in the comments.
