With much misunderstanding, players and fans are commenting on a decision by Activision Blizzard: As it has now been revealed, Blizzard dismissed Christie Golden back in January, who many consider one of the most talented writers and storytellers in gaming. Golden had been with Blizzard for 25 years and had been employed full-time since 2017. She worked on WoW and Starcraft, among others. Additionally, she is a bestselling author and award-winner. Apparently, she fell victim to the merger of Blizzard with Microsoft.
This is what Golden says:
- In a Tweet , the author states that she was let go at the end of January. Shortly after her dismissal, she learned that her nephew had passed away from cancer. She wanted to process these two blows of fate which occurred in quick succession, which is why she is only now speaking about her dismissal.
- At Blizzard, she wrote cinematics, song lyrics, and short stories for all Blizzard games.
- Although the dismissal was a shock for her, after all she had been with Blizzard for nearly 25 years, she is overwhelmed by the love and support of her colleagues. She will now turn to new projects.
Golden was responsible for the story of Sylvanas during WoW: Shadowlands – for which she even received death threats.

Why is the decision so surprising? Christie Golden is regarded by many fans as a cornerstone of WoW’s story. She is currently being blamed and revered for the cinematics of World of Warcraft.
The site wowhead reports: She was responsible for many in-game cinematics for Battle for Azeroth, the Anduin/Sylvanas cinematics for Shadowlands, and the short film “The Afterlives: Maldraxxus”.
Golden has written many novels in the world of World of Warcraft:

She is responsible for characters like Anduin, Draka, Dagran, and Baine and introduced Thrall, also known as “Green Jesus”, into the world together with Chris Metzen.
According to wowhead, Golden undoubtedly shaped the face and feel of WoW.
Much misunderstanding regarding the dismissal
What are the reactions? The reactions to the dismissal are very negative. Apparently, Golden was laid off along with the 1,900 employees in January, after Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard.
In the comments, the dismissal is discussed with cynicism. One wonders (via mop):
- Whether they are laying off the best creatives because they are not planning anything creative anyway
- Or if Microsoft perhaps wants to increase the budget for ChatGPT
- Some also say they are happy for her: A person with so much talent deserves better than having to constantly save the meta-plot of WoW
Many fans apparently looked forward to a collaboration with Chris Metzen.
Some WoW fans react toxically
Are there any opposing voices? There are also some who speak disparagingly about Golden and hold her responsible for story decisions in WoW: Some do not like the narrative direction WoW has taken after Legion. Too many Horde characters are being killed off.
This accusation is largely refuted in forums: Those who say such things have no idea. Golden had no influence on the direction of the story.
