Masayoshi Son, the founder of SoftBank Group, plans to raise 100 billion euros for a new chip project called Project Izanagi, which is supposed to rival Nvidia in processors for artificial intelligence.
This is reported by TomsHardware and refers to a report by Bloomberg. With this, the billionaire aims to create an independent company. However, many details are still unknown.
Second company besides chip firm ARM Holdings
What exactly is supposed to be developed? Son wants to found a company that complements the chip design firm Arm Holdings Plc. With this, the billionaire wants to build a strong, independent company. According to Bloomberg (Paywall), however, many details are under wraps because discussions have been private so far.
Whether the whole project works is still uncertain. After all, Nvidia has 16 years of development behind it and has plenty of engineers and competitive hardware. In particular, Nvidia’s AI chips are often a major topic. Thus, building a company that can successfully compete with Nvidia is likely to be a challenge.
Also interesting is the name of the company: Izanagi is the Japanese god of creation and life, which shows what an ambitious idea lies behind the project.
Where is the money coming from? SoftBank is said to have around 6.2 trillion yen available in funds. This is approximately 40 billion euros. Son allegedly wants to invest 30 billion himself, while an additional 70 billion is expected to come from the Middle East. However, this is not certain yet, and the data is all still speculative.
