The first part of the new adaptation of “Dune” was a great success. Next year, the sequel awaits us. But it won’t stop there. More films and series have already been announced.
What has happened so far? The adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction classic “Dune” was eagerly anticipated in 2021. Years earlier, director David Lynch had attempted to tackle the material. Lynch, who is known for his surreal and disturbing films, was unable to achieve success with the project in 1984. Only over the decades could the film develop a cult status among fans, and today it has a score of 65% on Rotten Tomatoes.
2021 was then the time ripe for a remake. The Canadian director Denis Villeneuve was known for “Arrival” and “Blade Runner 2049”. And lo and behold: with Timothée Chalamet in the role of Paul Atreides, Villeneuve achieved both artistic and commercial success. The film holds a critic rating of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences rating the film even higher at 90%.

Next year we will get new films and series
What’s next for Dune? Since the first part of the remake was a commercial success with worldwide earnings of 402 million USD (via boxofficemojo.com), the responsible studio Warner announced the sequel. It was originally scheduled to hit theaters in October 2023. However, due to the now-resolved actor strike, the film has been postponed to February 29, 2024.
Director Denis Villeneuve describes the second part as better in his view. While part 1 was more of an introduction to the world and characters, the story truly unfolds in the sequel. More action included.

But that’s not all. As Villeneuve recently reported at a press conference, the third part of the series is already in the works. The script is almost finished, but it may take some time before the film is shot. Villeneuve states:
I dream of making this third film. I don’t know exactly when I will return to Arrakis. I might take a detour first to gain some distance from the sun. For my mental health, I could do something else in the meantime, but my dream is to return to the planet I love so much one last time.

The third film will be titled “Messiah” and will deal with the story of the second book. The first two films only cover part 1. In total, there are six Dune novels in the main series by Frank Herbert, so there is no lack of material for further films.
Series fans will also get their money’s worth: Not only in cinemas will Dune take a firm place in the coming years. In addition to an announced MMO in the Dune universe, the franchise also wants to venture into the series realm. “Dune: Prophecy” is the title of a new HBO series that will likely air on the Sky streaming service in Germany.
The series is set about 10,000 years before the films. The story centers on two sisters who must fight against evil forces. Dune newcomers will also learn more about the mysterious Bene Gesserit, an organization of powerful women to which Paul Atreides’ mother belongs.
Dune fans will have plenty to look forward to in the coming years. About 58 years after the publication of the first novel, the franchise is experiencing its well-deserved renaissance.
