Keep an eye on the group
When it comes to playing, another factor is also important. After all, you are not playing the game alone. Just as you want to have an exciting character with a great development, your fellow players want that too.
Therefore, make sure to distribute so-called spotlight moments
fairly. Each of you wants to stand in the spotlight once and advance their character in the story. So give everyone the chance to contribute, propose solutions, and play out the strengths and weaknesses of their own characters.
Has someone not had a really cool moment for a while? Then perhaps now is the perfect opportunity to bring them to the forefront. If you manage to find the perfect balance between taking and giving the spotlight, there’s hardly anything standing in the way of your cool story and a group with great character developments.
Another point is that you shouldn’t forget that you can also feed and strengthen each other’s characters. Play together, communicate during the game, and ask questions. This way, you give yourselves and others the opportunity to give details and backstories to your characters a place and make them come alive.
Set milestones without overplanning
What can be helpful is to set small milestones. Of course, you don’t yet know the story you will experience, but that makes it exciting.
Like in real life, you can still set small goals that help you plan your development and give you some security in role-playing. Keep in mind not to be too specific and that your goals don’t need clear situations.
Do you have a grudge that you want to let go of? Do you want to overcome your fears and get them under control? Do you want to learn something specific? Do you want to befriend certain NPCs or even find love? Keep an eye out for suitable situations and gradually bring in your wishes. Set small goals that you want to achieve during the campaign.
This way, you always have a few small things ready that you can incorporate into the story and develop your character further. It’s best to discuss this with your game master, as they can ensure that they also present matching situations.
Have fun and don’t get too caught up!
Last but not least: Have fun with it. The ultimate goal should be that you and your comrades have the time of your lives while experiencing fictional adventures together. So try not to see it all too rigidly or plan every little detail.
All of these are good indicators you can use as you embark on the shared journey. But don’t get too bent on them and go with the flow of the game as it comes. Be bold and sometimes throw plans out the window when it feels right to you – after all, nothing will break easily, and much can also be discussed with fellow players and the game master.
With your character concepts, you can let your imagination run wild and live the life you would like to live if you found yourself in a world full of magic. However, some concepts are less suitable for actual gameplay, even if they may seem cool in video games or movies.
