Hitmonchan

- Game Generation: Pokémon Red & Blue
- Name Origin: Knock + Jackie Chan
With Hitmonchan, it is similar to Hitmonlee. The Pokémon was named after the Chinese actor Jackie Chan. He was marketed in the film industry as Bruce Lee’s successor and built on his successes in martial arts films.
In Japanese, however, it is again a different person who gave Hitmonchan its name. There, the pocket monster is called Ebiwaraa, which is derived from the Japanese boxer Hiroyuki Ebihara, who became known for his boxing skills in the flyweight division in Japan.
Wobbuffet

- Game Generation: Pokémon Gold & Silver
- Name Origin: Where exactly?
Wobbuffet is probably one of the quirkiest Pokémon. It resembles a punching bag that rebounds when attacked. The character of Wobbuffet is based on the Japanese comedian Sanpei Hayashiya, who has a similar gesture to Wobbuffet.
Hayashiya, like Wobbuffet, raises his arm to his forehead and then says “Sonansu, okusan”. This means something like “That’s right, my lady”. This is also the origin of Wobbuffet’s original Japanese name, which is “sonansu”.
In the world of Pokémon, it is even common to eat the little pocket monsters. Basically, they are also to blame since many look too good not to eat.
