Battlefield 2042 was released on November 19, 2021, and had a rocky start. There was a lot of criticism from the community, and the game was considered a massive flop. But how is the shooter doing now? How many people are currently playing Battlefield on Steam, and what do the Steam reviews look like?
Battlefield 2042 did not have an ideal start and received a lot of criticism for the shooter. Season 1 was supposed to save the game in June 2022 with new content. To some extent, the plan worked, but the game is still in rather poor shape.
Why was Battlefield 2042 criticized? The focus of the criticism was primarily on many innovations that EA wanted to bring new momentum to the series.
Here you can see a trailer for Season 1 of Battlefield 2042:
“It can be fun and some things are cool, but still not recommended at the moment”
What do the latest reviews on Steam say? The overall reviews for Battlefield 2042 are terrible on Steam. Only 29% of the 110,387 reviews are positive. That’s an extremely poor rating.
A bit better is the “recent reviews” category. The reviews are balanced with 52 % positive reviews out of a total of 2,583 (as of 01.08.2022, via Steam).
User Kondor explained his criticism in a review from July 10:
Almost nothing had changed in the game at the time of this review. The game is still full of bugs and there is too much emphasis on spending money… Battle Pass etc…
However, Season 1 is already a step in the right direction.
The weapons are partly so unbalanced that everyone only plays 2 weapons, one of which is the BSV-M, the weapon that does it all…
The vehicles are too exaggerated, mainly the new helicopters. You can only feel like you get to play a vehicle once every 10 games.
Oh, and the Portal game mode is also garbage. Just quickly thrown together maps without thinking about how they play in different modes.
It can be fun and some things are cool, but still not recommended at the moment. I will update the review if something changes…

On the other hand, SUPERCHIEFANGE positively commented in a review from August 1:
“Addictive, very fun game, a must for all true Battlefield fans! I’ve been playing since the launch last November and love all the new content and updates they’ve made. Two thumbs up!”
What are the current player numbers in Battlefield 2042? Despite some positive reviews, player numbers are still low. The 24-hour peak is 6,631 players who were in the game simultaneously.
The average player count over the last 30 days is 4,867.9 players. It is slightly better than the numbers from February to April 2022. However, the player count has decreased slightly since June 2022 (6,350.4) (via streamcharts.co).
The launch of Season 1 in June 2022 seemed to give Battlefield 2042 a small boost in players and improved the mood within the community. In particular, the reviews have become somewhat more positive.
However, Battlefield 2042 still does not have a particularly good standing with player numbers. While there was a surge in June 2022, there is now again a slight trend towards declining player numbers.
