Today, on February 4th, the official release of Dying Light 2 is here. To celebrate the launch, we at MeinMMO are giving you some tips that can help you get familiar with the mechanics.
Dying Light 2 is quite an extensive game that combines elements from various genres. The game can be described as an open-world RPG with survival mechanics. Therefore, there are several things to keep in mind, especially during your first steps.
That’s why we want to provide you with some helpful tips that can assist you while surviving in the zombie apocalypse. Currently, these are mainly designed for beginners, but we will gradually expand this article with more tips.
8 Tips for Dying Light 2
Our selection refers to different aspects of the game. In Dying Light 2, the various mechanics are interconnected.
The parkour system is closely linked to the combat system, but it is also crucial for movement. Equipment, in turn, is important for survival in combat, but it also influences your playstyle.
Additionally, useful tools like throwing knives, grenades, or Molotovs can be crafted by you and used for various tactics.
Not every fight needs to be fought
That’s why you shouldn’t engage in every fight: In Dying Light 2, zombies, bandits, and other threats are constantly after you. Especially zombies can be found almost around every corner.
You can hardly do anything else but run through the streets and take down every zombie. However, this is not something you should necessarily do, as there are some points that argue against it:
- Regular zombies yield very few experience points
- They drop very little loot
- You wear out your equipment without really benefiting from it
If you want good loot, you should rather look in other places. Especially abandoned GRE vehicles and containers often contain useful equipment and items.
Besides, you should focus on the stronger enemies. Special zombie variants often carry loot. Human enemies also frequently have equipment and other items with them.
Don’t hoard equipment
That’s why it’s not worth it: In Dying Light 2, your weapons can break after too much use. There is also no proper repair option. Currently, this is only possible through a trick and is very limited.
This quickly leads to picking up cool or strong weapons. They might break, after all. However, over the course of the game, I’ve realized: Hoarding weapons is not worth it. You level up faster and find new and stronger weapons before you can even destroy your hoarded items.
Before you know it, the once strong, rare weapon is one to two levels too low and suddenly can’t keep up with the regular weapon you found. Therefore, the rule is: Use what you find! Don’t hold back and put your strongest weapons directly into your quick selection.
What about clothes? In Dying Light 2, you find clothing sets in addition to weapons. In total, there are four different categories:
- Brawler – For melee fighters with one-handed weapons
- Medic – For all-rounders focused on parkour and healing
- Ranger – For ranged fighters with bows and crossbows
- Tank – For melee fighters with two-handed weapons who want to endure more
You will find pieces of these four categories from the beginning. However, at the start, it is not worth building specific builds or sets. By the time you have a ranged weapon, you’ll have progressed quite far in the game. Moreover, you level up and loot faster than you can truly utilize your sets for long.
So don’t hesitate and sell everything that doesn’t match your level. This also leads us to our next point.
Save your money – you will need it later
That’s why you should save: It’s simply not worth buying equipment at the beginning of the game. You find more than enough on your missions and strolls through the city.
In the later stages of the game, the offers from various traders get better but also significantly more expensive. Therefore, it is wise to have some financial backup.
If you have trouble finding valuable and strong loot, we already have a guide for hidden safes that can contain strong equipment:
Be cautious during nighttime excursions
What you need to keep in mind: At night, the game world becomes immensely more dangerous. A large portion of the zombies “sleep” during the day in buildings. However, at night, they swarm the streets.
Then some of the more dangerous specimens are present, and screamers are everywhere. As soon as they see you, they alert all zombies in the vicinity, and suddenly the whole block is after you.
How does such a hunt work? If you are spotted by screamers, a bar will be displayed, which fills up during the chase as you draw attention from more zombies.
Moreover, there are four stages. With each stage, more and more dangerous zombies join the hunt for you. To escape a hunt, you must either get far enough away from the mob to break line of sight for long enough or seek a safe zone where UV lights are present. Once you are under the protection of the UV lights, the mob will lose interest in you.
Otherwise, keep as far away from the streets as possible and stay on the rooftops when you’re just on the move. However, if you enter buildings, you need to pay attention to further things:
- Always keep an eye on your immunity indicator. Without UV light, you will transform into a zombie after a certain time and thus be “dead”.
- If it gets tight, there are two life-saving items: immunity boosters and UV mushrooms. They increase your immunity for a certain period.
- So always have enough of them in your inventory.
- Stealth can be very useful in buildings. Because although most zombies are now playing outside, there are still enough of them inside ready to devour you.
- So proceed cautiously and try not to alert the entire mob.
A final note: Be careful when using grenades and any other items that create a lot of noise. Explosions attract particularly fast zombies that can also pursue you onto the rooftops.
Use your tools for distraction
What you should keep in mind: Dying Light 2 offers you not only offensive tools for aggressive approaches. There are also numerous other items that expand your tactical options.
For instance, you can distract zombies and living enemies with various bait and other items. The following distraction options are available:
- Gold coins – To distract single enemies.
- Noisemakers – To distract human enemies and zombies
- Meat bait – Attracts zombies to the location where you place it.
Depending on the situation, you can use these items to lure zombies to you or distract them from a specific location.
For example, you can grab valuable loot that is guarded by a horde of zombies or create confusion in bandit camps. Moreover, you can even unleash zombies on bandits.
Be sparing with upgrades and weapon mods
What are upgrades? Thanks to the crafting system in Dying Light 2, you can upgrade your tools and weapon mods if you have the corresponding materials. The upgrades then improve the properties of the respective items.
That’s why you should wait: With each upgrade level, the requirements increase, and you need to invest more money and rarer materials. Especially at the beginning, this is quite expensive.
Later in the game, you reach the necessary items more quickly and can also make money faster. So, wait with your upgrades.
You may also find items that already meet higher upgrade levels with some luck at traders and while exploring the game world.
Unlock fast travel points
What you should keep in mind: Dying Light 2 offers a fast travel feature, although it is not unlocked at the beginning of the game.
If you want to use the feature, you need to find the subway stations in the game world and activate their power to turn them into safe houses and fast travel points.
To do this, you need to activate a different number of generators while solving smaller and simple climbing puzzles.
Use the game world as a weapon
What you should keep in mind: In Dying Light 2, you shouldn’t rely only on your weapons and items. Your parkour and climbing skills are also particularly important.
You can use them not only for movement but also in combat. With the right skills, you can perform acrobatic attacks, use your environment to your advantage, and become a true whirlwind.
As you progress through the game, you unlock abilities that allow you to push enemies off rooftops, set traps, or simply confuse them. So take a close look at your surroundings and consider how you can use them to your advantage.
The combat system may seem simple, but as you progress further in the game, more opportunities will open up for you.
