What new online games can we look forward to in 2018 and beyond? Which MMOs and MMORPGs are currently in development and worth your attention?
The MMO genre itself is currently experiencing a boom. However, it is no longer the MMORPG genre of 10 years ago, when publishers with million-dollar budgets tried to build the next WoW. Those days are over.
We currently have three major trends:
- These are huge AAA titles. They try to achieve something monumental by merging MMO elements with other genres – it’s about creating new brands or bringing old ones into the future.
- There are big titles from Asia trying to push the MMORPG genre in a new direction, finding a new twist, an evolution.
- And there are smaller indie titles in the West, aiming to capture the magic of the past, taking different paths than the beaten track.
We want to introduce you to eight games that we consider the most promising, likely to be playable in 2018 – whether as a beta, in early access, or as a release. There are significantly more games in development than these, but we currently consider these the most promising.
Bless – Western Fantasy MMORPG from Korea
- What is Bless? Bless is as close as it gets to a safe bet in the MMORPG genre for 2018. It is a theme park MMORPG from Korea but does not look like it. It is classic, offering PvE and PvP. Bless is set in a fantasy world inspired by our medieval era.
- How has the development of Bless gone so far? Actually, everything went according to plan until they released Bless to players. They admired the great graphics and sound but had issues with performance, gameplay, and some game systems. Therefore, Bless had to go back to the drawing board and aims to retry in 2018 with a global version.
Will Bless find its fans in the West?
- What is Bless at its best? At its best, Bless is solid genre fare for fans yearning for a classic MMORPG with contemporary presentation and graphics. It could play a decent role in the West and offer hungry MMORPG fans something to chew on.
- What is Bless at its worst? At its worst, it is solid genre fare that fails to find a sufficiently large fanbase and quickly fades away.
- What has happened with Bless in 2018: Bless launched on May 30 in an early access version on Steam. After a rocky start with technical issues, the MMORPG slowly stabilized. However, it still has some problems. The developers promise to address these issues and provide more content. Bless has polarized the MMORPG community. Currently, it has balanced reviews on Steam with 46% as of September 17.
