Ikelos Shotgun – Close and Personal
That’s why the weapon was so strong: The legendary Ikelos Shotgun, officially “IKELOS_SF_V1.0.1”, came into play with the perk Barrel Shroud. This caused the shotgun to deal significantly higher damage for 5 seconds after a melee hit.
The fully automatic weapon, however, needed significantly less than 5 seconds to pump its entire magazine into an enemy. The damage output overshadowed every other weapon and melted even raid bosses.
What happened to the OP gun? The shotgun has been hit by several nerfs over time. The most dramatic change was that Barrel Shroud now only works for 3 shots and then must be reactivated by another melee hit. The auto-reload nerf has made shotguns generally weaker for boss DPS. However, there is good news: Barrel Shroud can now also roll on some other pump actions.
That’s why Guardians loved their Ikelos pump: An important factor is the cool, futuristic look of the Ikelos pump. However, the gameplay also always brought laughter. Basically, players would first slap their enemies and then blast them into oblivion.

Hard Light – The current over weapon
That’s why the weapon is so strong: Hard Light fires laser beams that bounce off surfaces and even deal extra damage. Additionally, as the only auto rifle, the weapon has no damage drop-off and also possesses strong stats. However, for a long time, it was deemed one of the most useless exotics in Destiny.
Since part 1, the auto rifle has been plagued by a so-called screenshake, a kind of shaking and twitching while firing – landing precise shots was pure luck. And all the powerful abilities were of no use when you couldn’t see where you were shooting.
Recently, the issue has been resolved, plus there was a noticeable buff for auto rifles in Season 10. Together, both led to Hard Light not only dominating but terrorizing the crucible.
What happened to the OP gun? Currently, it does not look like anything will change regarding Hard Light’s dominance in the foreseeable future.
Perhaps the situation will look different in the future and will be remembered nostalgically. Currently, however, the weapon is more of a nuisance to many, even here at MeinMMO:
