Legendary Grenade Launchers – From Underdog to DPS Champion
That’s why the weapon was so strong: Grenade launchers are a relatively new category in the Destiny universe but were hardly played at first. Bungie tried to help the unpopular explosive weapon with a buff but went a bit overboard.
By the end of Year 2, grenade launchers of all shapes and colors dominated PvE. Especially with the perk Smart Rounds, the damage skyrocketed. Noteworthy examples include:
What happened to the OP guns? Grenade launchers were hit by the auto-reload nerf, but not as hard as many other weapons. Even at the start of the current Season 10, they underwent a new adjustment. They are still strong, but no longer as dominant.
That’s why Guardians loved their grenade launchers: The reasons for love for grenade launchers are quite diverse. For one, they cause explosions – always a plus. On the other hand, players ground for a strong specimen for a long time or fought through tough quests for a top weapon and thus developed a sense of attachment.
Izanagi’s Burden – One shot, one kill
That’s why the weapon was so strong: The exotic sniper Izanagi’s Burden possesses the unique ability to combine its entire magazine into a super bullet. The damage of this projectile was enough to almost instantly erase everything except the strongest end bosses.
It’s also important to note that Izanagi is a special weapon, thus allowing room for a powerful power weapon (most other exotic snipers are all power weapons). This gave guardians room for two boss killers in their loadout.
What happened to the OP gun? Season 10 was not kind to Izanagi’s Burden. The damage was slightly decreased, but the much more significant change was the nerf to the reload animation. It now feels like an eternity before you can deliver the follow-up shot or have your super projectile ready. The weapon is, however, by no means weak; it has just now entered the league of special weapons.
That’s why Guardians loved Izanagi: The sniper embodied the power fantasy of many sharpshooters. One precise shot and every problem is history. Also, many guardians waited a long time for their powerful Izanagi, as the quest was long bugged and thus uncompletable.
Prometheus Lens – The Gjallar Laser burned everything
That’s why the weapon was so strong: The Prometheus Lens came as a new DLC exotic into the game and immediately broke the entire balance. A bug caused the weapon to deal damage values beyond good and evil.
In the Crucible, no other weapon could hold a candle to the laser beam. Mysteriously, the weapon found its way into the inventory of vendor Xur, causing chaos as every Guardian utilized the “Gjallar Laser”.
What happened to the OP gun? The laser show didn’t last long. Bungie only tolerated the era of the Prometheus Lens for one weekend. However, the Destiny developer honored the weapon by rewarding the Guardians who were brave or crazy enough to step into the chaos of the Crucible that weekend with a cool emblem:
That’s why Guardians loved their Gjallar Laser: During the time of the Prometheus Lens, PvP was still slower than it is today. The fast TTK and chaotic battles made the Crucible lively.
