In a lab at sea, researchers use the DNA of Mew to clone Mewtwo. Their experiments go so far that they clone not only the psychic Pokémon but also other pocket monsters. With the help of his psychokinetic powers, Mewtwo breaks out and is taken in by Giovanni.
However, Mewtwo realizes that he is only being used by Giovanni and escapes again. He develops the belief that Pokémon and humans can never become friends. Therefore, he sets out to free the Pokémon from their slavery, so they can live a peaceful life. This way, no Pokémon would be forced to participate in battles.
However, the psychic Pokémon resorts to a brutal method: it wants to destroy all of humanity with a storm. But when Ash is petrified by the attacks of the Pokémon and Mewtwo sees the infinite love of Pikachu for Ash, he realizes that he has been pursuing the wrong goals.
