Outlook on Upcoming MMOs
Currently, many exciting space MMOs are in development. We want to introduce you to two of them because they are very ambitious and in some cases even quite well-developed. At the end, we also have a little bonus for you.
Dual Universe – Great Hope in Alpha
Dual Universe is a sandbox MMO currently still in alpha phase. More specifically: It has been in Alpha Phase 3 since January but is expected to enter beta phase in summer 2020.
In Dual Universe, you build your own economy; politics and trade also play a significant role. At the same time, you are able to construct your own spaceships and bases. However, you must work hard to gather the necessary resources by mining them directly on the planets.
With these materials, you can then start constructing – or engage in trade with other players. Since all players exist in the same world, you should be able to find plenty of trading partners, but also enemies and allies.
Star Citizen – The MMO that will never be finished?
Star Citizen is often described as a mammoth project when it comes to space MMOs. The game filled with Hollywood stars has been in development since 2012 – which has also led to a lot of criticism.
However, the game already features many interesting aspects appreciated by fans. The world of Star Citizen offers several freely explorable solar systems that are also situated in a persistent world. This means: If you place a cup of coffee on a planet and come back a month later, it will still be there as long as no other player has removed it.
Additionally, space battles, duels on planets, and different classes like trader, smuggler, or pirate come into play. Star Citizen aims to feel like a second life in space – when the final release will become a reality is still up in the air. However, 2020 should at least see progress with the single-player campaign Squadron 42.
Bonus: No Man’s Sky
No Man’s Sky is not strictly speaking an MMO but belongs more to the survival genre. However, since the NEXT update, the vast space landscape of the game can also be explored in multiplayer, and since the BEYOND update, it can almost be classified as a survival MMO.
Especially players who are waiting for games from this list, such as Star Citizen, should give No Man’s Sky another chance. It offers room for exciting space adventures, filled with trillions of planets and a comprehensive crafting system. From the anger that surrounded the game at release in 2016, almost nothing is left – because No Man’s Sky has now developed into a true experience in space – and MMO fans should also have their fun here.
