The Secret World – Overrun by the Remake?
The Secret World is another Funcom MMO that is currently threatened with extinction. The unusual horror MMO has never been a big success for the studio. Too different, too cumbersome, and too inaccessible was the game. This didn’t change even with the excellent storytelling that feels straight out of a Lovecraft novel or a Dan Brown story.
Many MMO players couldn’t relate to the “anti-MMO,” while solo gamers were discouraged by the gameplay itself. The modern setting, in turn, was not what fans of elves and dwarves wanted.
Nonetheless, a hard-core of fans remained steadfast, who were still loyal to the game and were thrilled about every new player. However, Funcom has now decided to relaunch The Secret World as The Secret World Legends. While the old game will still be allowed to live on, it will only receive a kind of charity. This means: TSW will not receive any further content updates; all efforts will be directed towards the remake.
The Secret World – New Beginning Could Divide the Community
The remake will remain the same game, but the gameplay will be significantly overhauled. For example, the combat system is supposed to become more dynamic. Overall, the new The Secret World should be less cumbersome and more accessible. Additionally, The Secret World Legends will not be an MMO but a “Shared World RPG”.
All of this sounds good, but it has one significant catch. The new TSW is not compatible with the old version. You will have to start completely over. It is likely that the already limited player base will then split between the two titles, while new players will most likely start with TSW: Legends from the outset. It is possible that Funcom will eventually pull the plug on the old TSW altogether.
Game number six is a classic MMO suffering from tough competition.
