Age of Conan & Anarchy Online – No Significant Work Planned Anymore
Age of Conan was a massive success for Funcom at its release, impressing with wild barbarians, brutal finishing moves, and naked breasts. But sadly, the game overstretched itself a bit, and soon the lack of endgame content, bugs, and insufficient content supply took a toll on the large player numbers.
Today, Age of Conan leads a shadowy existence as a free-to-play title frequented by only a few players. This is partly due to the fact that since 2012 no new expansion has been released, and currently the demand for brutal and naked barbarians is being satisfied by Conan Exiles from the same publisher. It is quite possible that the historically troubled studio Funcom will soon decide that they do not need two Conan games.
Anarchy Online – Staying Alive in a Coma
Anarchy Online launched in 2001 and is considered one of the oldest existing online role-playing games. It still runs as a subscription MMORPG that requires regular payments. The game has now been released on Steam as a heavily restricted free-to-play version. However, if you want to fully engage, you still have to maintain a subscription.
The developers at Funcom currently plan not to shut down the game. However, there isn’t much money left to be made with the MMO veteran.
Therefore, the developers announced in early 2017 that they would not put any “significant work” into Anarchy Online and Age of Conan. The games are expected to continue operating as they have been, without any significant changes. Whether this ultimately means that the games will soon find their end remains to be seen.
The next game will soon be re-released but could end up cannibalizing itself.
