The Warhammer universe is home to many powerful wizards: We present to you the 7 most powerful in this list.
Outwardly, Warhammer is primarily known for one thing, namely big, muscular warriors in heavy armor. It doesn’t matter which of the three Warhammer worlds one looks at:
- Warhammer 40,000 has its Space Marines, genetically modified super soldiers, who are armored from head to toe and far stronger than any normal human
- Age of Sigmar has something like the fantasy version of that with the Stormcast Eternals
- In Warhammer Fantasy, there are the Chaos Warriors in their threatening armor, particularly the followers of the Chaos god Khorne, who are known for their bloodlust
But Warhammer is not just a universe of hyper-masculine soldiers; it’s also a world where powerful wizards shake mountains – and that’s not a metaphor in this case.
What is being ranked here? We are ranking the 7 most powerful wizards from Warhammer Fantasy. Therefore, no characters are considered that occur solely in one of the other worlds, such as Age of Sigmar or 40,000. Who is stronger is determined by the lore. There is no official ranking, but the power level of many wizards can be estimated fairly well based on their deeds. For the lore, we use the Lexicanum. Although it is an online wiki created by fans, they refer to official material.
As a little extra, we also look at what these wizards have done during the “End Times”, i.e. the end of the world.
Rank 7: Balthasar Gelt
At the very bottom of our ranking is Balthasar Gelt, by the way the only human on this list. His interest in uniting magic and science made Gelt more powerful than all his colleagues in the Order of Gold. Moreover, he is the Supreme Patriarch of the wizard orders of the Empire, making him the leader of all magic schools and thus an important political figure.
In the launch trailer for Immortal Empires for Total War: Warhammer 3, the wizard is seen alongside the dragon Zhao Ming:
Balthasar Gelt always wears a golden mask and metallic robes. He has not removed them since an accident when an explosion occurred in his laboratory. Some say he is horribly disfigured – others whisper that he turned his own flesh into gold. Gelt was fascinated by alchemy and obsessed with turning things into gold.
In his time, Gelt was the most powerful wizard of the Empire. His end came during a ritual that could have prevented the literal end of the world of Warhammer Fantasy. In the midst of this ritual, however, Gelt was stabbed in the back by a power-hungry vampire, Mannfred von Carstein.
