6. The Substance
Director: Coralie Fargeat
What is The Substance about? Demi Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, an Oscar-winning actress who now hosts a TV show. However, her show gets canceled on her 50th birthday because she is too old. After that, she contacts an organization for The Substance
. This substance is supposed to help her create a better and younger version of herself.
At first glance, the film doesn’t sound like a classic horror film, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. The film is clear body horror exploring aging, beauty standards, and Hollywood. It features many intense scenes highlighted by shocking cuts.
Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley give fantastic performances here, and the film is worth watching just for the good effects, which, due to the theme, are even more intense than the scandal film Terrifier 3.
7. Longlegs
Director: Oz Perkins
What is Longlegs about? There is a series of unsolved murders related to a killer named Longlegs
. To catch him, Agent Carter enlists the help of talented Lee Harker, who seems to have a sixth sense for such murders.
Longlegs made headlines because Nicolas Cage plays the titular villain here, and he does so frighteningly well. With the good makeup, he is almost unrecognizable. The lead actress, Maika Monroe, also does her job well. You empathize with her and want to solve the mystery.
The true star of the film is the fantastic look. Through clever camera tricks and interesting perspectives and formats, a unique world is created that often doesn’t feel like ours. It feels like an abandoned dome where only the few characters we see live.
Thus, Oz Perkins creates a film that feels like something entirely new despite the familiar premise. Longlegs is one of the best horror films in recent years.
