1. The First Omen
Director: Arkasha Stevenson
What is The First Omen about? The First Omen is the prequel to the film The Omen from 1976. Margaret Daino travels to Rome to finally become a full-fledged nun dedicated to the church. But, as one might expect, strange things happen in the orphanage where she works.
The First Omen is essentially a classic nun horror film, as has been seen many times before. However, the film does this very well. It hardly relies on clichéd techniques like jump scares. The film stays true to its origins, is beautifully and atmospherically shot, and features a strong lead actress in Nell Tiger Free.
2. Alien: Romulus
Director: Fede Alvarez
What is Alien: Romulus about? Rain lives with her brother Andy on a mining colony, where they only live to work. But they want to get out, which is why they plan to steal a cryo-pod from an abandoned space station. However, there is a good reason why it was abandoned; there is a great danger hidden on the space station.
Alien: Romulus is a love letter to the entire franchise but allows plenty of horror in as well. The set pieces are exciting and creative, and the film’s standout is Andy, played by David Johnson. He showcases several mood changes in the film, contributing to horror while also evoking sympathy.
