Pokémon GO
In the summer of 2016, Pokémon GO launched in Germany and quickly captivated masses of players. In the first weeks after release, thousands of players could be seen on the streets hunting for the little monsters.
Many of the newly minted trainers remembered Pokémon from their childhood and were unaware that they were suddenly playing an MMO. In Pokémon GO, you experience the MMO features somewhat “through the looking glass.”
Pokémon GO is the little exception on our MMO list. Although the team does not itself say that the game is an MMO, the MMO grandfather Raph Koster says: Everything points in that direction! And he should know.
Your task is simply explained: You want to be the very best, like no one ever was. More seriously, you start Pokémon GO with your trainer at level 1 and choose a starter Pokémon. Then the great adventure begins, where you catch wild Pokémon with a selection of Poké Balls and try to take over gyms.
As you progress in the game, the strength of the Pokémon you encounter increases as well. With a strong Pokémon team, you can defeat raid bosses more easily. Need some backup for a strong opponent? No problem – just ask your friends or other trainers nearby. The group combat system allows you to attack raid bosses with multiple players.
At the same time, many people are playing the game. Especially at key locations and gyms in the city center, many trainers gather during peak times. The progression system raises your trainer level. You earn experience points by catching Pokémon or battling strong raid bosses.
