We are looking at the new MMOs and MMORPGs that we believe have the best chances of success in 2019. You should keep an eye on the development of these online games if you are into online gaming.
The genre of online games has radically changed in recent years. While 10 years ago everyone tried to develop the next WoW, today there are various trends in the market that strongly differ.
In recent years, trends have alternated: it has gone from MOBAs to loot shooters to survival MMOs. Apart from that, indie MMORPGs are trying to capture the charm of a bygone era. Ambitious games want to take the genre to new dimensions: they dream of simulated, huge worlds where everything is interconnected.
2019 will probably be the year in online gaming where three different movements bear fruit that we have been observing for years:
- the indie MMORPG trend could finally become market-ready. Independent games funded via Kickstarter and in development for years are slowly maturing for the big stage
- besides that, new loot shooters are due after 3 to 5 years in development. They want to combine MMO ideas with great gunplay and the search for ever more loot – and this also for PS4 and Xbox One
- from Asia come action MMOs that combine RPG elements with ideas from hack and slash. They want to lead MMORPGs into a new era by relying on fast-paced gameplay.
All movements have their fans. We at MeinMMO want to represent the most important representatives in this article.

New World – aims to bring back the massive in MMO
This is New World (PC): It is an MMO with RPG and survival elements from Amazon. New World takes place during the colonization of North America in the 17th century – yet all myths and legends are true here. It is a colonial horror setting.
The special thing about New World is the scale of the game. With the technology of Amazon backing, New World is supposed to be huge and provide a hostile home for thousands of players. The MMO will launch with immense dimensions and then continue to grow.
How has the development of New World been so far? The game was announced in September 2016. For a long time, there was little information available.
However, since Gamescom 2018, it has slowly become clear what kind of game “New World” is meant to be: a gigantic and ambitious simulation. The developers seem to want to expand the gameplay of survival games like Rust or ARK to the dimensions of EVE Online.
Meanwhile, initial closed alphas are running, which are constantly growing but are still under NDA.
This is New World at its best: A modern, action-packed game that you can immerse yourself in and that sets new technical standards. A successful New World would tell great stories crafted by players, like armies of players fighting against each other.
New World could bring back the “massive” in MMOs and become the next big thing on Twitch. That would surely be in Amazon’s interest, after all, they own the streaming platform.
This is New World at its worst: A large but empty world that falls short of expectations. There are many such survival games – the worst thing for New World would probably be to get lost in the crowd and fail to clarify what makes this special.

What to expect from New World in 2019: Currently, the alpha is running under NDA. There is no roadmap for New World. In 2019, one can expect that the development will progress slowly but steadily.
Perhaps even a beta will open at the end of 2019. However, more information will surely become known, and more people will play New World and hopefully also discover it for themselves.
