The mood around Diablo Immortal is turning. Now some fans have found a game that looks exactly like Immortal but is already 6 years old. They suspect that the framework was taken and simply provided with new skins.
This is the situation with Immortal right now
- Since June 2, Diablo Immortal has officially launched and there is still no new update.
- The only new content is a second, far too hard raid boss. The mood among fans is currently turning.
- Now there is new discontent in the community, as some fans have found a mobile game from which Diablo Immortal is allegedly copied.
What kind of game is this? Endless of God, also known as Elder God or Endless God, was released in August 2016 as a mobile Diablo alternative in China. However, the game was discontinued in February 2020.
The game was an action RPG revolving around the epic of Homer from Greek mythology. Players confronted the “evil gods” as one of 4 classes among well-known figures.
The game was only available in Chinese and never released in the West. Here we have embedded gameplay for you:
“From bad to worse”
This is what the fans say: As early as 2018, during the presentation of Diablo Immortal, there were accusations that Immortal is just a blatant copy. Back then, it was about the exact same game, Endless of God.
Today, some fans compared the games again on reddit and claim that it is “the same game”. Now that we know the gameplay and visuals of Diablo Immortal well, it is easier to identify similarities.
Here you can see gameplay for all classes from Diablo Immortal. Also check out our tier list of the best classes:
The community is outraged about the obvious similarities, but also not surprised. Immortal is “the same game,” just a copy, but such things are constantly done in so-called gacha games anyway.
It is common for developers to simply release the same game with a new skin. And since NetEase is the developer behind both games, it is even less surprising.
The degree of copying is particularly striking here. Even our own interview with Wyatt Cheng is quoted, in which the game director explains how long the development time for certain content is. Fans no longer believe this statement after seeing the images.
Recycling is not unusual
Is the game really a blatant copy? In fact, the gameplay shown above looks like that of the barbarian from Diablo Immortal, with nearly identical skills, albeit with different weapons. The system with the charging ultimate is the same.
Particularly striking are the almost copied login screens and interfaces of the two games. However, the gameplay clip lacks information on features like clans and other MMO content that makes up Diablo Immortal.
Developers often recycle their works and change the visuals or storyline, as seen in the Fallout series. It is usually not lucrative and also unnecessary to create an entirely new engine for every new game.
Whether Immortal is viewed as a blatant copy or simply as a new iteration of a game with a new story, new look, and translations for the West remains to be seen. MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus would like to see more of the game in the upcoming Diablo 4:
