Marvel’s Avengers promises entertaining action with superheroes and exciting co-op battles in multiplayer. However, if you want to buy Square Enix’s superhero spectacle for PC, PS4, Stadia, or Xbox One, there are a few things you should know beforehand.
The release of Marvel’s Avengers will take place on September 4, 2020, on PS4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC.

This is how the campaign plays out
This is the story: In Marvel’s Avengers, you are presented with a dark storyline where the Avengers suffer a catastrophic defeat at the very beginning and are subsequently disbanded. The dubious organization A.I.M. takes control and enforces a regime of terror to hunt down rogue superheroes.
Years later, the young and enthusiastic fangirl Kamala Khan begins to reunite the Avengers and stand up against A.I.M. and their nefarious leader M.O.D.O.K.
Throughout the campaign, you will first play as Kamala Khan, who also has superpowers and will later be known as Ms. Marvel. Gradually, you will recruit all missing members of the Avengers and also play as all these heroes in between, such as Hulk or Thor.
The story is engagingly staged and does not skimp on the typical Marvel style, complete with humor and quirky main characters.
Marvel’s Avengers is not the MCU: Those hoping for an adaptation of the movies from the MCU will find something different here. The story of Marvel’s Avengers is a completely independent, new story.
Thus, the familiar heroes do not look like they do in the movies, which has already surprised some fans.
This is how the multiplayer mode works
How does the multiplayer mode work? Once you have completed the single-player campaign and all Avengers have been recruited, the actual game begins. The campaign is basically a huge introductory scenario. Because once the Avengers are reunited, the fight against A.I.M. and other villains really begins.
Here, you can then step into the costumes of the heroes alone or with up to 3 friends in co-op. If no friends are available, the AI takes over the other 3 heroes. Depending on the selected mission you choose at the “War Table”, you will then have to fend off multiple waves of enemies, complete a mission objective, or even take on a supervillain and their entourage.
How are the heroes selected? Each player chooses a played Avenger hero. For the game, the following heroes are available at the start:
- Thor
- Captain America
- Black Widow
- Iron Man
- Hulk
- Ms. Marvel
However, if one player is already playing as Hulk, you cannot embody a second green rage monster. However, some heroes may receive “Echoes” in the future, meaning other characters that have a very similar playstyle. These could include She-Hulk or the “Iron Man” counterpart War Machine.
Are there raids? Later after the launch, there will be large missions described as “raid-like”. According to a data leak, the first of these raids will take place in Wakanda, the hidden high-tech kingdom of Black Panther in Africa.
Is there PvP? At launch, there is no PvP mode in Marvel’s Avengers. The multiplayer part is solely dedicated to co-op action. However, since Marvel’s Avengers is designed as a live-service game, PvP action could be on the horizon at a later date.

How do the heroes differ? Each hero plays differently and favors a different playstyle:
- The powerful Hulk smashes everything and is very resilient
- Thor plays with his hammer like Kratos from God of War
- Black Widow is nimble and shoots with guns
- Ms. Marvel uses her elastic arms and legs to beat enemies from a distance
- Iron Man can fly and uses plenty of gadgets in battle
- Captain America shields himself with his shield and can bounce it everywhere when thrown
Can you customize “your” heroes? Each hero has fixed moves and pros and cons. However, thanks to a sophisticated stats and equipment system, you can customize a lot.
This allows you to fill the important roles in the team that are crucial for MMORPGs. You can fully skill your Hulk as a tank or let the lovable Ms. Marvel act as a healer for the team.
What about the loot system? To further upgrade your heroes, there is valuable loot to collect in each mission. This allows you to upgrade your heroes further and customize even more. Because of this mix of action gameplay and the hunt for improvements, Avengers has already been described as Destiny with superheroes.
These new contents are coming
What heroes are still in planning? Soon after the launch, Hawkeye will join the game in November as another character. A data leak has also revealed the names of other heroes that are apparently also planned. These include Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, Scarlett Witch, or She-Hulk.
New heroes will each get their own solo mission to properly introduce them to the game.
What about Spider-Man? Those who want to play the famous hero Spider-Man can only do so on one platform: the PS4, and later the PS5. Only there will the helpful neighborhood spider be allowed to spin its webs, which many fans find very frustrating.
