With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the popular CoD series is doing many things new or different from previous series installments. If you are considering purchasing the latest title in the “Call of Duty” series for PC, PS4, or Xbox One, there are a few things you should know.
Only a few days left until the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare celebrates its release on October 25 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
Everything important about the launch of CoD: Modern Warfare can be found here: When exactly does Call of Duty: Modern Warfare come out? The most important questions about the release.
- But what makes the new Call of Duty actually special?
- What are the most important changes compared to its predecessors?
- And what should potential buyers and interested parties consider before buying Modern Warfare?
With Modern Warfare, Call of Duty (again) has a heart for single player
This is changing in the campaign: Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 completely forwent a single-player campaign in 2018, disappointing many fans. Because even though Call of Duty is primarily played for its multiplayer by most players, the single-player story always had a loyal fan base.
But this year there is good news. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will provide single-player lovers with a full-fledged campaign.
What is the campaign about? You will take on the roles of members of various SpecOps operators.
The focus of the single-player experience is on modern warfare through the mentioned special forces and intelligence services in various current crisis areas of the present. These include scenarios in the Middle East as well as anti-terror operations in European cities like London.
The campaign is set to contain controversial and shocking elements and paint a realistic picture of the asymmetric conflicts of today. It will remain grounded – you will search in vain for wall runs, building-high jumps with exoskeletons, or crazy futuristic equipment.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2019 is a reboot – not a sequel
What does Modern Warfare have to do with earlier CoDs? In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, you will experience a lot of new things, but you will also encounter a familiar face like the legendary SAS Captain Price. However, those expecting a continuation of the story from the previous Modern Warfare series may be disappointed.
Because Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 is, story-wise, neither a sequel nor a prequel, but a reboot of the CoD sub-series “Modern Warfare”.
What does this mean for the experience? Specifically, it means: The story plays completely independently of the previous events of the predecessors in a whole own, new interpretation of the game universe.
Actions that took place in Modern Warfare 1 – 3 may not have occurred in this new Modern Warfare world.
If you encounter familiar characters from previous installments, they may not necessarily be the same people as before.
Characters who died in the predecessors may also reappear in Modern Warfare 2019 without any problem.
No Zombies, no Battle Royale – This is what the multiplayer offers
What does the multiplayer of CoD Modern Warfare offer? For many fans, the multiplayer part is the decisive factor in whether they will buy a Call of Duty or not.
Here too, the latest CoD installment aims to bring fresh wind into the franchise. There will be numerous tried-and-tested modes, but also some new formats – both for PvP and coop:
- Multiplayer battles in the classic 6vs6 format
- brand new modes like the 2vs2 Gunfight
- or massive battles in the new Ground War mode for up to 64 players – with controllable vehicles almost in a Battlefield style
- Coop operations in the Spec Ops mode
What you will search for in vain: Those hoping for a zombie mode or for battle royale like Blackout from Black Ops 4 will be disappointed.
Because zombies have already been excluded from the game, battle royale will not be available at launch, although some leaks speak of a possible release afterwards.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare offers Cross Play: With Modern Warfare 2019, it is for the first time in the history of Call of Duty possible to play across platforms.
Specifically, this means: Players on PS4, Xbox One, and PC can play together or against each other in multiplayer.
Detailed information about this feature can be found here:
- This is how Call of Duty: Modern Warfare wants to ensure fair crossplay
- Open beta of Modern Warfare brings new feature – This is included in cross save
Also important: Call of Duty traditionally places great importance on gunplay.
New features like the Gunsmith and numerous revisions should ensure that the weapons feel as real as never before.
No loot boxes, no season pass – This is how new content will be available now
This is what many fans feared: Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was heavily criticized for its aggressive microtransaction policy and loot box mechanics.
In the eyes of many critics, Black Ops 4 had more microtransactions than many free-to-play titles and was generally too focused on squeezing as much money as possible from players.
Weapons that were packed in loot boxes were particularly heavily criticized.
Many feared that this direction would also be found in Modern Warfare 2019, but they were wrong.
This is what to expect in Modern Warfare: In Modern Warfare, there will no longer be these loot boxes and supply drops. They are also not to be implemented afterwards. Instead of loot boxes, a seasonal battle pass system will be introduced. All content that affects gameplay will always be unlocked through play.
More information can be found here: Revolution in Call of Duty – Modern Warfare eliminates loot boxes, gets battle pass
Additionally, there will no longer be a paid season pass for post-launch DLCs and content. After the release of Modern Warfare, new maps and modes will also make their way into the game – but free for all players and simultaneously on all platforms.
