Reason 6: A Big Question Mark over the Story
Speaking of Black Desert and Baldur’s Gate 3 – where will the story of Crimson Desert ultimately fit? In the MMORPG from Pearl Abyss, grind and sandbox experience take center stage.
Black Desert tells stories, but these mainly serve as a thread to guide you through the world and accompany character progression. At least for the author of these lines, the characters and events have always been irrelevant because they lack substance, tension, and focus on the story.
Crimson Desert is said to be significantly more story-focused in comparison and is set to provide an elaborately staged main story until the end. However, the authors at Pearl Abyss must still prove that they can tell compelling stories and build interesting characters compared to Black Desert.
However, even at best, we probably shouldn’t expect a complex narrative adventure like in Baldur’s Gate 3, with various outcomes, iconic characters like an Astarion or a Karlach, and all sorts of relationships that directly affect the narratives. At least GameStar colleague Michi Obermeier expressed disappointment with the start of the story after his first 6 hours, via YouTube.
It would already be a success for Crimson Desert if it could position itself as a linear but enjoyable story experience somewhere in between. However, those for whom stories are the most important aspect of such a game might ultimately be disappointed – we really hope that won’t be the case.
