Project Titan
Setting: Science Fiction | Developer: Blizzard | Announcement: 2007 | Cancellation: 2013 | Planned Platforms: PC
What was Project Titan supposed to be? Details about this MMORPG are still unknown to this day. Allegedly, it was supposed to differ significantly from World of Warcraft. Players were to play super soldiers who led a normal life during the day and carried out important missions to protect humanity at night. Allegedly, Project Titan was set in a near future of Earth.
What was the special feature? Blizzard was determined to create something that could coexist alongside World of Warcraft. Therefore, a concept was developed that gave the player a regular second life in the virtual world, but made this special through quests. Blizzard attempted to create a next-gen MMO.
Why was it canceled? According to analysts, Blizzard reportedly invested about 50 million US dollars in the development of Project Titan. Allegedly, the project according to then Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime became too overwhelming for the developer studio.
It was far too extensive and ambitious. In addition, the team was said to have spent too much time developing the engine and too little on content. Ultimately, the project was canceled. From the remains of Project Titan, the online shooter Overwatch was then born.
