Why is the game worthwhile? The developer has updated the old N64 title and brought the technology up to date: The graphics look decent in 4K, the lighting effects are well done, and gameplay also offers everything the old game provided: a great soundtrack, complex branching levels, and fast-paced shooter action. Anyone who knows the original game can even activate the old cheats. As a bonus, there is also an epilogue with seven levels that the developer added to the game.
What doesn’t work as well: While the environments look crisp and modern, you still fight against 2D enemies, which looks very odd, as the 2D sprites rotate with your every movement. It’s also a pity that Doom 64 provides no explanations for the story. There is also no multiplayer mode included.
Who is the game suitable for? If you enjoy fast, uncompromising shooter action and want to shoot through dozens of demons, you should take a look at Doom 64. Thanks to the bonus epilogue, the remaster is also worthwhile for veterans who know the old game inside and out and will see something new.

What is Doom? Doom is based on the original from 1993 but relies on a modern technology framework with the id-Tech-6 engine. As a Marine, you shoot your way through a lot of monsters and demons on the space station on Mars, or you fight in online matches against other players.
Why is the game worthwhile? The game features great animations, and the soundtrack is characteristically powerful and fitting. There are numerous types of weapons that you can upgrade and customize. The level design is also characteristically complex and branching for Doom and challenges the player. The game has a sense of humor and often does not take itself too seriously, but is still dark in tone. The multiplayer offers various PvP modes, including Team Deathmatch, Soul Harvest, Freeze Tag, Clan Tag, Domination, and Warpath.
What doesn’t work as well: The textures can appear blurry and sloppy at times, and if you’ve played Doom before, you will hardly encounter new enemies in the game: id Software has not come up with much new here. The story also leaves a lot to be desired; the focus of the game is on uncomplicated shooter action. It’s also disappointing that the game does not include a pure deathmatch mode, as you are always in teams in multiplayer.

Helldivers

What is Helldivers? Helldivers is a top-down twin-stick shooter where you blast your way through a science fiction world inspired by Aliens and Starship Troopers.
Why is the game worthwhile? Helldivers is most comparable to Alien Nation but heavily emphasizes humor. Players are members of the “Super-Earth,” which is governed by a controlled democracy. As Helldivers, you fight against aliens that threaten Super-Earth. The satirical humor delivers many jabs, such as the bugs being fought by the government because they can produce oil – a jab at the foreign policy of today’s great powers.
The battles are chaotic, and friendly fire is enabled, which quickly creates fun and chaos during cooperative fights. Before battles, you can equip yourself with weapons and other items that can be used in the fights. What doesn’t work as well: Despite the fun gameplay, Helldivers lacks variety within the missions, as you often do the same thing. The weapon balancing is also only mediocre, as some weapons are significantly more useful than others. Additionally, there are overall limited customization options for our soldiers.
Who is the game suitable for? If you are looking for a cool co-op title that is wonderfully chaotic and at times feels like a science fiction variant of Magicka, then you should check out Helldivers.

Why is the game worthwhile? The shooter features atmospheric desert panoramas and large areas in which the player operates. The open spaces provide many opportunities for approaching a mission and for how to strategically eliminate opponents. Additionally, the game offers a successful shooting mechanics and it is also possible to play the campaign in co-op.
What doesn’t work as well: The AI in the game varies greatly. Sometimes it seems to know where we are, other times it is completely clueless. The variety between missions could also be greater and better. Additionally, close combat is too strong, as while you need several hits with ranged weapons, a precise melee hit is sufficient.
Who is the game suitable for? If you’re looking for a shooter that rewards careful approaches and additionally offers a nice co-op mode, then you should check out Sniper Elite 3.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood – International and German Edition

What is Wolfenstein: Youngblood? It is a co-op shooter from the Wolfenstein series. The story takes place 19 years after the end of the last part “A New Colossus.” The protagonists are the daughters of the previous hero BJ Blazkowicz: Jess and Soph. They are controlled by the player and a co-op partner. Alternatively, the AI takes control.
Why is the game worthwhile? Wolfenstein: Youngblood is not seen as a full-fledged Wolfenstein but as a spin-off. However, Youngblood primarily focuses on the co-op mode, as the entire story can be played through together. When playing alone, the second person is controlled by the AI. But the co-op mode of Youngblood is really fun, finds MeinMMO author Benedict Grothaus. The difficulty level is demanding enough that it is worth coordinating with your partner and working together toward a specific goal. Rapid shooting without thinking is not rewarded here.
However, the co-op mode is not the only reason why Youngblood is worthwhile. It offers great boss battles and even a small look into the past as an Easter egg. What doesn’t work as well: The game doesn’t skimp on collect-a-thon tasks, which can be quite annoying after several hours of play. While the game is designed for co-op, it doesn’t offer a ping system for non-verbal communication, like Apex Legends. The save points can sometimes be frustrating, and the difficulty level fluctuates sharply, also due to the poor spawning points of enemies.
Who is the game suitable for? If you like the Wolfenstein series and are also up for a few good hours of co-op, you should check out the adventure of the twins.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered

What is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered? This is a remaster of the first-person shooter from 2009 with modern graphics. The remastered version only includes the MW2 campaign and not the old multiplayer mode.
Why is the game worthwhile? The campaign offers non-stop action with various locations: sometimes we fight on an oil rig, another time we are in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, and at another time we must take over the White House. The pace of the shooter is deliberately kept high. The developers have mainly worked on the graphics of Modern Warfare 2, which are impressive. Character models, shadows, and textures look excellent, and the game runs at a smooth 60 FPS on PlayStation 4. Also cool: The PS4 version also supports HDR.
What doesn’t work as well: Even in the remastered version, the heavily debated airport scene is still cut in the German version.
The story of “Americans against Russians” is not particularly logical or coherent, and with 6 hours of playtime, the campaign is also not very long. It’s also disappointing that there’s only the campaign in the remaster, leaving the multiplayer modes aside.
Who is the game suitable for? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered offers you a great shooter remake with modernized visuals and well-written missions. If you’re looking for an excitingly staged shooter campaign, you should check out the remaster.
