The indie game V Rising is a huge success, attracting tens of thousands of players. However, it often puzzles newcomers to the survival genre as well as experienced veterans. MeinMMO will share some tricks that will make your life as a vampire much easier – after we’ve bitten our teeth into it.
V Rising is quite popular. Although some of the mechanics can drive players to frustration, the new survival game with vampires is impressive.
On Steam, V Rising boasts an impressive 88% positive ratings and even on Twitch, the new survival game can even dethrone established titles, at least at the time of its release. Of course, the influx of new players is huge at first.
We also took a look at V Rising and examined what makes the game so good. Our first steps out of the coffin were a bit shaky, but the second attempt was more confident. During our journey, we discovered some helpful tips that could have saved us a lot of time and effort later on.

1. As a bear, you can destroy simple walls, iron, and silver
Relatively early in the game, you will encounter wooden walls and palisades, for example, when facing the boss Quincey, the Bandit King. He hides in a fortress protected by walls and doors. You actually need to complete the following steps to reach Quincey:
- kill Clive the Firestarter to learn the recipe for explosives and sulfur
- craft explosives at the alchemy bench
- take the explosives to the doors, place and ignite them
This comes with some drawbacks. Explosives cannot be taken through teleporters and require quite a bit of resources and time to craft.
However, if you hunt the wild bear before Quincey, you will learn the bear form. This may seem useless at first, but it has a hidden ability: you can destroy stronger materials. By using its special ability (standard key: Q), you can break down the gates of the bandit fortress in one hit.
Another advantage: you transform, so you do not need any additional materials, and it works anywhere and anytime. According to players, this does not work with other players’ palisades, but it does work with higher-tier ores like iron and silver.
2. Equip your best gear when you want to hunt V Blood
Bosses or V-Blood carriers can be hunted through your blood altar. You pick up their trail and then follow them to their location. However, the blood altar has a mechanic that isn’t clearly explained.
Which targets you can pursue depends on your equipped item level. In V Rising, you do not level up yourself but only your equipment. This means: the higher the level of your equipment, the more bosses you have to choose from for hunting.
Therefore, always equip the best armor and weapon you have at the blood altar – regardless of whether you want to use them. In the example, you can see the difference between an iron weapon and an improved iron weapon with otherwise identical equipment:
Alternatively, you can also hunt bosses using the interactive map of V Rising. The map shows you the location of all resources and bosses, but this does somewhat diminish the hunting experience, which significantly contributes to the vampire flair.
3. Buildings can be easily moved
When you build your base, you will gradually expand it over time. New rooms are added or become larger, new buildings and production facilities are needed. This also means that you will have to rearrange at some point if you didn’t plan big enough initially.
In many survival games, workbenches and the like need to be torn down and rebuilt. In V Rising, however, you can simply move them with a single click in the build menu, easily in rooms and over walls or even long distances.
Simply move with the selected building as normal. You can even interact with doors and park chests, workbenches, coffins, and more right in front of the door. This saves resources, as you typically only get back 75% of the materials when disassembling.
This is also useful when you build new chests but want them in the place of the old ones. Move the old chest, build the new one, and then reorganize the contents. Additionally, this works with a mechanic of V Rising, the special rooms.
Most production facilities are more efficient when they are in a closed room with the right floor. However, you need to unlock the corresponding floors through research first. You can still build the corresponding workbenches and just move them later.
4. You can teleport horses and see their stats
In V Rising, there are many portals that make traveling around the world faster. However, you can only use these if you are not carrying any resources. By default, you are only allowed to carry:
- weapons
- armor
- consumables
Even explosives are not allowed and block teleportation. About halfway through the game, you will find horses that make transport faster. However, there’s a trick: horses can be teleported.
When you are mounted, you can simply ride your mount to the portal and activate it. You will then arrive with the horse at the destination. This is especially useful when you set out for a hunt and want to leave mounted directly from your base.
By the way: if you press Tab next to or on your horse, you can see its stats and give it water to keep it alive. This way, you can keep your particularly good steeds longer and leave less popular horses somewhere.
5. Always sleep in your coffin, or trolls will drag you around
As long as you are sleeping, other players can simply “drag” you. Literally, the function allows them to drag the bodies of other vampires around. This means trolls or that one friend who only has foolish ideas can also kill you on PvE servers.
When you log out of V Rising, your vampire remains where you left the game and sleeps. This mechanic exists in many survival games. This means you are unprotected, but there is another disadvantage.
If someone drags you into the sunlight, you will burn there, and presumably everything that is not bloodbound to you will disappear too.
You can protect yourself by simply sleeping in your coffin. It does not matter whether it is made of wood or stone. In the coffin, you are always protected from being dragged and can log out and sleep in peace.
V Rising is still in Early Access but already shows great potential – despite some hidden tricks. We will continue to play and test it for a while, but you will probably find it soon in our list of the best survival games for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.
