The colorful world of anime has something to offer for everyone. Whether you’re into action, thriller, drama, or romance – every genre is represented. The problem often arises when you have multiple expectations. Brutal action is often hard to pair with a good story – but sometimes it works. Here we present 5 anime with a really good, intense story and still plenty of action.
Vinland Saga
Alternative names: /
Genres: Action, Adventure, Drama
Episodes: 48 (2 seasons)
Stream available on: Crunchyroll
The young Thorfinn has grown up with stories of the legendary “Vinland”. A fertile land where there is no reason to fight. But he never arrives there, as before he reaches adulthood, war breaks out in his homeland. The conflict between England and the Danes forces the Norsemen to intervene. Thorfinn is trained as an assassin from an early age, bringing death and destruction to the battlefield – long before he can comprehend the havoc he is wreaking.
What to expect from Vinland Saga: Vinland Saga is bloody, brutal, and merciless. The battles of the Norsemen are thrilling and action-packed, ensuring that there is never a dull moment. At the same time, the series takes a critical look at war and conflicts of all kinds and how they can destroy families and friendships. Even though the anime sometimes features slower episodes, this only builds up to the next climax, from which not all characters will emerge alive.
Vinland Saga was a surprise hit of recent years and every action fan should give the series a chance.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
Alternative names: Code Geass: Hangyako no Lelouch
Genres: Action, Drama, SciFi, Mecha
Episodes: 50 (2 seasons, completed)
Stream available on: Currently no known streaming provider, available for purchase only.
In 2010, the Holy Britannian Empire established itself as a military superpower and captured Japan as well. The former Japanese are now only referred to as “Elevens” because they live in “Area 11” of the empire. The Britannian student Lelouch one day finds himself in the midst of a clash between the Holy Empire and the resistance fighters of Japan. He comes into contact with the “Power of Kings” – an ability that allows him to give any person exactly one command that they cannot refuse.
With this power, he begins a revenge campaign against Britannia as “Zero”, playing allies and enemies against each other.
What to expect from Code Geass: Code Geass is considered one of the “great” anime from the 2000s and impresses with multifaceted characters and interesting conflicts. Even though “mecha battles” may seem unfamiliar to some, the political intrigues always create engaging conflicts, where Lelouch has to stay one step ahead of his enemies.
In contrast to many other series, Code Geass is also complete. The story finds a worthy ending that one can talk and think about for a long time.
