With Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, the series is doing many things differently this year. If you are considering getting the latest Call of Duty title, you should keep the following things in mind.
On October 12, 2018, it’s official – Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be released. But what distinguishes this year’s Call of Duty title? What are the most important changes compared to its predecessors? And what should one keep in mind before buying the game?
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 does not have a single-player campaign
If you enjoy the single-player campaign in Call of Duty, you should be cautious when purchasing this year. Because with Black Ops 4, for the first time in the history of Call of Duty, there will be no traditional single-player campaign.

Why is the single-player campaign missing? There has been much speculation about the absence of the campaign. For example, it was said that the developers realized that they simply wouldn’t be ready in time and thus scrapped it completely.
However, in an interview with GameInformer, Treyarch clarified: A single-player campaign was never planned.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has been designed as a social game from the start. Interaction with other players across all modes has always been the focus. A traditional single-player campaign simply wouldn’t fit into this vision. The focus of Black Ops 4 is clearly on the multiplayer part. For this, the title is said to offer more opportunities than ever before to experience the game in the long run together with friends.

No content for solo players? Even if Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 focuses on multiplayer, that doesn’t mean solo players won’t have anything to do, according to the developers.
In multiplayer, there will be missions where the backgrounds of the individual playable specialists will be explored. These missions can also be approached solo. Additionally, there will be several zombie modes that can also be played alone – AI partners will fill the team.
What the traditional multiplayer part of Black Ops 4 offers
What’s included in the traditional multiplayer – the heart of every Call of Duty? Quite a lot!
The maps: Upon launch, players can enjoy a total of 14 multiplayer maps in various different modes. The map lineup includes brand new maps and remakes of some fan favorites such as Jungle, Firing Range, and Summit.
For more information about all multiplayer maps, you can find out here: These 14 multiplayer maps are available at the launch of CoD: Black Ops 4

The modes: In addition to numerous known modes such as Team Deathmatch, Hardpoint, or Domination, there are also two new formats – Control and Heist.
In the objective-oriented Control mode, two teams compete to attack or defend two points on the map.
In Heist, the goal is to collect a bag of cash and bring it to a random pickup point. The stolen money can then be used to buy new equipment.
In this video, you can get an impression of the new modes:
The gameplay: The gameplay in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be more grounded again. The days of towering exoskeleton jumps and wall runs are over.
Call of Duty returns in Black Ops 4, despite the futuristic setting, to the roots of the series and offers classic “boots on the ground” combat in modern attire. It will be slower, more tactical, and team-oriented than in the last installments of the Call of Duty series.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout – The proprietary battle royale mode
The classic multiplayer experience of Call of Duty will be expanded this year in Black Ops 4 with a proprietary battle royale named Blackout. After PUBG in 2017 and Fortnite in 2018 shook the market and captivated millions of players in front of the screens, Call of Duty is now following suit with the Blackout mode.
Whether it will be able to build on the successes of the two competing titles remains to be seen. However, in the beta, Blackout was very well received by players and critics.

What makes Blackout special? In classic battle royale fashion, 100 players fight over survival on an ever-shrinking area and utilize various weapons and equipment.
It is possible to participate in solos, duos, and quads, either alone, in pairs, or in four-man teams.
What is different from the battle royale competition? The game is played on the largest map in the history of Call of Duty, which includes parts of popular maps such as Nuketown. You can also use vehicles. Additionally, zombies contribute to additional chaos in parts of the map.
The perks in the battle royale mode Blackout function a bit differently than previously expected. Here, the perks represent a kind of power-ups, scattered throughout the battlefield, granting temporary advantages.

Zombie fans will also get their money’s worth in CoD: Black Ops 4
Zombie mode fans also have plenty to do in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The zombie offering features the most extensive launch content across all Call of Duty titles to date.
What do zombies do in Call of Duty? What started about 10 years ago as an Easter egg has evolved over time into one of the most popular modes of the Black Ops series. Up to four players can cooperate with numerous cool characters to fend off waves of the undead – all on different maps and wrapped in a crazy sci-fi story.
The zombie maps: In Black Ops 4, there are a total of three well-known zombie maps available directly at launch:
- IX
- Voyage of Despair
- Blood of the Dead
All three maps come with their own storylines, but they intertwine. Additionally, for owners of the Black Ops Pass, there will be another zombie content available directly at launch. While this is still under the designation “Classified”, there are already hints that it could be a remake of the popular map V (Five), which takes place in the Pentagon.

These innovations are also included in the zombie mode:
- A new custom mutation system will allow players to customize their zombie experience with around 100 different settings, such as player health or zombie speed.
- Additionally, it will be possible to adjust the difficulty level in Black Ops 4 again.
- The zombie rush mode will simplify numerous aspects specifically for beginners.
- With the post-launch feature Callings, there will be regular updates for the zombie mode. These will include time-limited challenges, seasonal content, and some surprises.
Further post-launch content in Black Ops 4 is only available with the Black Ops Pass
Activision chose a new content policy for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. After the release, DLCs will supply the game with additional content. However, for the first time, these will all be tied to the Black Ops Pass. Unlike before, these contents will not be available for purchase individually – to the dismay of many fans.

In return, buyers will be provided with new content faster and more frequently during the first year of the live season, rather than receiving new DLCs only four times a year as before.
What is the Black Ops Pass? It is essentially an annual pass that provides the buyer with additional content – spread over the first year of Black Ops 4.
