What is Firestorm?
Firestorm is Battlefield 5’s attempt to compete in the popular and competitive Battle Royale genre.
It is a new game mode for multiplayer. Up to 64 players fight in typical Battlefield fashion on land, water, and in the air. A round lasts approximately 20 minutes.
All of this takes place on a massive map, which is continually restricted by a circular and all-consuming firestorm that destroys everything in its path. Whoever stands last wins.
What sets Firestorm apart from the competition?
Battlefield 5 does not simply adapt the tried and true Battle Royale principle – it also mixes in some Battlefield-specific elements to create its own experience.
These are the key points that distinguish Battlefield 5 from the competition:
- Vehicles: True to Battlefield, there will be 17 different vehicles, including tanks, transporters, tractors, and even a helicopter. Vehicles can provide a crucial advantage in important moments but can also be countered by infantry.
- Optional tasks: In Firestorm, you can take objectives such as bunkers or supply points, rewarding you with the best vehicles or equipment.
- Reinforcements: Even in seemingly hopeless situations, you can turn the tide with reinforcements. You can call for support in the form of devastating V-1 rockets, artillery strikes, supply deliveries, or even vehicles to regain the upper hand.
- Destructible environment: As expected, the Firestorm mode allows you to flatten almost anything. With tanks, artillery attacks, or the feared V-1, you can deny enemies any cover – whether it’s a house or a bunker. Those who only hide in buildings and camp will have a tough time.
Can I play Firestorm solo?
Many potential players wonder if they can enjoy the new mode of Battlefield 5 as a lone wolf. After all, the latest Battle Royale hit, Apex Legends – also from EA – relies on 3-man teams. This discourages many potential players who would prefer to play solo.
This will not be a problem in Firestorm. Battlefield 5’s Battle Royale can be played
- solo
- in duos, meaning two players (though this will come later, limited time)
- or in squads, meaning four players

The three different formats are noticeably different. If you die in a solo match, that’s it for you. In a squad, there are options such as revives, resupply, or equipment swaps.
What does the world of Firestorm offer?
Firestorm takes place on the largest map in the history of the Battlefield series so far, the largest map overall.
The Battle Royale map is named Halvøy and is 10 times larger than Hamada – the current largest map in Battlefield.
In this vast game world, there are various climate zones with corresponding vegetation and different weather conditions.
For example, in the mountains, you will face not only potential enemies but also snow and limited visibility. In forested areas, an enemy can be lurking behind every tree. In wide, temperate regions, you constantly risk being caught by a sniper.
Those seeking shelter in buildings can never feel 100% secure. Due to environmental destruction, it can also hit you there at any time.
Is Firestorm Free-2-Play?
Here too, Battlefield 5 sets itself apart from numerous competitors and takes a unique path. Similar to Blackout from Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, the Firestorm mode is free to play for all owners of the base game.
However, having any version of Battlefield 5 is a prerequisite for engaging with Firestorm. There is no Free-2-Play version – at least not at launch.
All those who already have Battlefield 5 will receive Firestorm as a free update as part of the Tides of War, since the Battle Royale mode was not completed at the launch of the title.
