Outdoors it is becoming wintry and the holidays are approaching. All Baldur’s-Gate-3 players have just received a big pre-Christmas gift in the form of Patch 5. To make them even happier, we have here 5 gift ideas for which you don’t have to work at Larian Studios.
As the holidays and thus the big gift season is upon us, the question arises as to what to give a Baldur’s Gate 3 fan. We have put together five inspirations for you.
By the way, you can read about what’s new in Patch 5 here:
A round of Dungeons & Dragons
Baldur’s Gate 3 is based on Dungeons & Dragons. The game not only takes place in the world of pen & paper but also adopts the entire dice system and many items. After a few intense rounds of Baldur’s Gate 3, you will already be familiar with many elements of Dungeons & Dragons. So, there is nothing standing in the way of starting your own first D&D adventure.
For a round of Dungeons & Dragons, you need yourself and a few friends. You can come together digitally via voice/video chat and online tools like Roll20 or One D&D. Of course, you can also meet for an in-person session at home.
For a first start, you need paper, pen, a set of dice, characters, and the basic rules. The basic rules are available for free download from Wizards of the Coast – unfortunately, only in English.
In this YouTube video, there are tips and tricks for playing D&D online:
But for a proper game, you actually need an adventure, a story. This can be written by your chosen game master. Alternatively, you can also give one of the two starter sets available in German. Everything you need for your first D&D session is included.
If you are experienced pen-and-paper players, you can also give away the adventure Descend into Avernus
. The book covers the backstory to Baldur’s Gate 3 – here you learn, for example, where the tiefling refugees from the Emerald Grove in the game originally came from.
Dice
As mentioned above, you need pen-and-paper dice to play Dungeons & Dragons. By the way, dice look very nice and are a coveted collectible among players. Hardly a D&D session goes by without showing off beautiful new sets to each other.
A set for pen & paper consists of seven dice, named after the number of sides they have:
- W4
- W6
- W8
- W10
- W100 (percentile die)
- W12
- W20
Occasionally, a W2, a coin, is also needed, and very rarely do the rules call for an obscure W3. However, a W3 can also be replaced with a W6. Just decide which two sides of the die should represent 1, 2, and 3.
Dice come in all possible colors and shapes – yes, also shapes. You can purchase a set at your local game store or buy the official ones from Wizards of the Coast online. Alternatively, there’s always the option to shop from one of the many small artisan shops online. For example, on Etsy there is a flood of small merchants offering handmade sets – the selection is largest here.
Even cooler is the gift if the dice set comes in the favorite colors of the recipient. Or you find a set that matches the favorite Baldur’s Gate 3 character of the person receiving the gift.
Cards for Magic: The Gathering
You don’t have to play Magic: The Gathering to collect the cards I want to recommend to you. The card game also belongs to Wizards of the Coast and has many overlaps with Dungeons & Dragons. Of course, there’s also a series of cards related to Baldur’s Gate 3.
Included are many NPCs, but also all companions. Here are three examples:

Anyone who loves Baldur’s Gate 3 will surely be delighted with cards of their favorite characters.
Wizards of the Coast offers the cards in commander decks, set, draft, and collector boosters with fancy packaging. You can purchase them online or in a local game shop of your choice.
If you want to give away a specific card, it gets tricky: with commander decks, it is established which cards are included, but with boosters, it is random. There are online card shops that can help, as well as the local game store.
Many stores that sell boosters also offer the service of buying and reselling individual cards. Ask your local card shop if they provide this service. If you search online, you can look at websites like cardmarket.com or gate-to-the-games.de. In the editorial office, we have had very good experiences with bb-spiele.de.
A game like Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 is truly a very special game. It is currently the best CRPG and offers many things that other games in the genre do not – the completely synchronized cutscenes, for example.
But of course, there are enough games that come very close to the Baldur’s Gate 3 experience overall. My colleague Benedict has put together two lists for you, in which he presents a total of 13 alternatives – once dedicated to turn-based combat and once without.
Play Baldur’s Gate 3 with them in co-op
Nothing brings someone more joy than sharing their passion with friends and family. Maybe video games aren’t your thing or you don’t have enough time for a mammoth game like Baldur’s Gate 3. But that is exactly what makes your gift so special:
You’re giving with a co-op round not just a co-op round, but a shared and most likely fun time together. It also shows that you care about the person and are willing to engage with their interests. You’re giving joy.
This is particularly appreciated if you live a bit further apart. A round of D&D works well digitally, but perhaps not as smoothly as a game designed for that purpose. Moreover, a round of Baldur’s Gate 3 is also a lot of fun for two, while pen & paper becomes really enjoyable with three to five players.
Did you find something appealing in the list? We wish you much success in putting together your gift.
