Repair Costs – Doesn’t Anyone Think of the Tanks!
Tanking was an ungrateful role in Classic. And that was not only because of the awful aggro mechanics mentioned earlier. While all players welcomed tanks (especially warriors) with open arms and gladly bound them for a lifetime, the game offered little reward for this role.
The reason for this was the high repair costs for tanks.
The costs to repair equipment in Classic were determined by various factors. The quality of the equipment played a role, so epic (purple) items were more expensive to repair than uncommon (green) or rare (blue). Moreover, repairing plate armor was many times more expensive than fixing cloth gear.
Since tanks were usually the first to die when a fight went awry, the plate wearers often had to reach for their wallets.
For tanks, visiting a dungeon was an expensive affair. Players almost always came out of an instance with less gold in their bags than before.
In our guild, it used to be common for everyone to chip in a few gold to help the tank with his repair costs. Because otherwise, those players would likely never be able to afford an epic mount. But that would be another story…
