Flight Paths – Only One Point per Click
Nowadays, if you want to travel from Dalaran to various points on the Broken Isles, it typically takes only 1-2 minutes with a Gryphon to reach your destination.
In Classic, it was different. The Gryphons flew quite slowly, allowing players to admire the beautiful environments of Classic, but that had little to do with “fast travel”. It was rather a leisurely journey around the zone’s sights. Objectively, it was beautiful, but you couldn’t really get from A to B quickly.
What was even worse: flight points were not always logically connected. From each Gryphon master, you could only fly one station further in the desired direction. There, the character had to make a stop and then choose the next station. These connections were not always sensible, and if you wanted to go from Darkshore to Felwood, you had to take a long detour via Ashenvale.
Generally, the length of the flight paths was a problem. For example, if an Alliance member wanted to go to Ahn’Qiraj, they had to fly from Darnassus. The combined distance of the flight points from Darnassus to Silithus took almost 20 minutes. You could leisurely prepare dinner on the side – if you didn’t have to click on the next Gryphon master every 2 minutes.
By the way: Traveling by Gryphon was relatively expensive back then. Because one or two gold coins for a journey across the continent had to be painstakingly earned back…
On the next pages, we will discuss the Aggro system in Classic – it had its pitfalls.
