Similar to the charlatan, one expects a criminal to have malicious intentions solely from the name, which can be associated with a rogue. They have made a living through pickpocketing and burglary, perhaps even belonging to a gang, or had to stand up against larger guilds on their own. But this also shapes character.
This background can promote not only Dexterity but also attributes like Constitution and Intelligence, which makes the class suitable not only for the classic rogue.
Your past may also mean that you can present certain connections and acquaintances that can help a party – even if these are not entirely legal.
While the charlatan is a cunning deceiver, the criminal is not only an excellent thief but also possesses good people skills and negotiating talent, along with a healthy dose of mistrust and vigilance – fitting for their talent.
Watchful characters can not only add their proficiency bonus to their initiative, but they can also exchange it with a willing ally when that ally needs to act first urgently. Thus, the criminal, despite their less-than-trustworthy past and profession, can be a strong supporter. Your fighters will thank you – and so will your gold supply.
