The graphics of video games have been constantly evolving from the very beginning. While some games currently return to their roots, the games on this list aim to show how much is actually possible.
In this list, you will find five games that have already impressed with their stunning graphics before their release. Some of these games you can expect this year. Others are projects that do not yet have a specific release date.
Black Myth: Wukong
What kind of game is this? Black Myth: Wukong is among the most anticipated games of this year. On August 20, you can finally play it on Steam, PS5, and Xbox.
The Soulslike title developed by Game Science is inspired by the Chinese folklore surrounding the Monkey King Sun Wukong. Besides presumably interesting storytelling and a mystical setting in an open world, the game already impresses with its graphics. It definitely shows what is technically possible nowadays and looks impressive and fluid not only in the cutscenes but also in the gameplay.
As a player, you use the famous staff of the Monkey King in combat, which can be extended. Together with spells and other attacks, you can face many enemies of various sizes and types. How massive the boss battles can be has already been shown at gamescom 2023.
Unrecord
What kind of game is this? Unrecord is a single-player shooter developed by a single person and has been causing a stir online for its realistic graphics for several years. You follow the gameplay from the perspective of a bodycam, which is a camera that the character carries directly on their body. Even the first images of the game look strikingly real.
As a player, however, you do not only shoot around and eliminate your enemies. Unrecord is supposed to include complex dialogues with NPCs that will also present you with morally challenging decisions. These, in turn, seem to affect the story. On Steam, it is said that Unrecord can be compared to a detective novel or thriller.
The Bird That Drinks Tears
What kind of game is this? Not much is known about this game yet, as there has only been a first trailer so far, but hardly any further information. According to the video description on YouTube this game is supposed to be based on the Korean fantasy novel “The Bird That Drinks Tears” (original title: The Nhaga Eater).
Even though not much is known yet, the game already impresses many players with its first trailer. Because it simply shines with beautiful and almost perfect graphics. Whether the developers can maintain this level and also impress graphically in gameplay will only be determined when more information and videos are available.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
What kind of game is this? S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is the sequel to a well-known survival shooter from 2007. You fight your way through Chernobyl again, where the flora and fauna mutated after the nuclear disaster and the city of Pripyat became a military exclusion zone.
The shooter impresses with a photorealistic world and, from everything seen so far, with very fluid gameplay. Especially the use of light and shadow contributes to the overall atmosphere of the game and makes the environment appear incredibly realistic.
Project M
What kind of game is this? Project M is a new game from NCSoft, but not much is known yet. It is still unclear on which platforms you can expect the game at some point. However, the trailer partially shows the buttons of a PlayStation controller. So it seems likely that the game will at least be released on PS5.
In the trailer, the gameplay of the game resembles titles like Detroit Become Human as well as Resident Evil. You seem to play a kind of investigator who saves the real world from nasty people in a kind of technical parallel world. At least that’s the impression conveyed by the first videos. What exactly is behind the story remains to be seen.
However, it is clear that the game sets the bar quite high graphically. Cutscenes and gameplay hardly differ from each other and both look incredibly realistic.
