Spy x Family
Alternative Names: /
Genres: Action, Comedy, Romance
Stream available on: Crunchyroll
Episodes: 25
Loid Forger works as a secret agent. His latest target: he needs to get in touch with a politician, but this proves to be difficult. The only opportunity that might arise would be at a parent meeting at the school attended by the politician’s son. To achieve this, Loid must build a fake family, complete with a wife and child, and ensure that the child gets good grades so as not to be expelled from school.
As fate would have it, he picks a ruthless assassin, “Yor,” as his fake wife while adopting the little Anya, who can read minds, as his daughter.
This odd trio now tries to pursue their own individual plans while keeping their true nature and talents hidden from the rest of the family.
What to expect from the anime: Spy X Family is at its heart a comedy, and thus it sometimes becomes a bit absurd – but that’s intentionally due to the three quirky main characters. Nevertheless, each of the protagonists is absolutely lovable, and it’s simply nice to see how they slowly grow together as a family.
Especially the mind-reading Anya, who knows her parents’ true nature, often causes chaos. Although she tries to help everyone, the intelligence of the 6-year-old is not quite enough to implement plans well – which often leads to amusing and sometimes suspenseful chaos.
Kaguya Sama: Love is War
Alternative Names: Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen
Genres: Comedy, Romance
Stream available on: Crunchyroll
Episodes: 37
Miyuki Shirogane and Kaguya Shinomiya are the absolute elite of their school. Due to their roles in the student council, they often have to spend time together after school and during breaks. Both have fallen in love with each other – but neither dares to take the first step. Their ambition ensures that they do not want to give up their positions, and whoever admits to being the “inferior” one by confessing love first makes themselves vulnerable.
Both are now trying to tactically force the other into a confession – but this only leads to chaos and plenty of misunderstandings.
What to expect from the anime: Comedy in its purest form. Even if you’re typically not into romantic stories, you won’t be able to resist grinning at “Love is War.” The way the two protagonists try to force the other into a confession of love while constantly being torpedoed by their feelings is simply magnificent.
Love is War is told episodically, so it’s not necessary to watch every episode to understand the plot – but you won’t want to miss any of them anyway. Because the characters, the humor, and even the narrator are sure to capture the attention of anyone still brimming with a spark of life.
Attack On Titan
Alternative Names: Shingeki no Kyojin
Genres: Action, Drama
Stream available on: Crunchyroll
Episodes: 90
The world of Eren Jaeger consists mainly of three great walls that encircle the realm of humanity. Huge walls that protect mankind from what lurks outside: titans. Gigantic beings that are eager to devour humans. At least that’s the legend, as many believe it’s merely an excuse to keep people trapped inside the walls.
That there is some truth to the legend becomes evident when one of the walls suddenly crumbles and titans flood into the city. Hundreds are eaten, and Eren must watch as his own mother is devoured. Swearing revenge, he subsequently joins the army to partake in the fight against the titans.
What to expect from the anime: Brutality and cruelty – for Attack on Titan knows no mercy. Titans devour humans alive, blood sprays in all directions, and bodies are often torn to pieces. Yet behind all this lies an exciting, mysterious, and highly intricate story that unfolds piece by piece and is much more complex than it may seem in the first episodes.
Remarkably, Attack on Titan undergoes a transformation throughout the seasons. It starts as an exciting action anime with some horror elements and evolves into a political thriller reminiscent of the best days of “Game of Thrones,” where even some heroes eventually emerge as villains.
Attack on Titan is already considered the “anime of this generation” – and for good reason.
Would you recommend other anime to ease the entry? Which would that be?
