Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale
Genre: Capitalism JRPG | Developer: EasyGameStation | Release Date: 09/10/2010 | Steam Rating: 96% positive | Price: €14.99 | Link to Steam page: Recettear on Steam
If you’ve played JRPGs or MMORPGs, you’ve also been to one or another item shop. The devoted NPCs here sell potions, armor, recipes, and sometimes even rare relics to great heroes.
But in Recettear, you’re not the great heroes. You are the owner of the item shop. You need to deal with finances, manage a solid range of items, and at the same time fend off the “heroes” who want to sell you their last junk from their dungeon runs.
What sounds simple and fun – and has really great characters – is often quite tough. Because at fixed intervals, you must meet certain financial goals. If you fail to do so, the game ends coldly with a Game Over.
The shop management is spiced up by visiting some small dungeons yourself to get better goods (or loot corpses of incapable adventurers whose possessions you can then sell).
Basically, Recettear is an unusual JRPG viewed from a different perspective.
After playing this game, it will definitely be hard for you to want to sell “every junk” to the traders in World of Warcraft, ESO, or SWTOR. Because being an NPC shopkeeper is not that easy.
