What kind of game is this? Splatoon 2 is a colorful shooting game where you play a goblin-like creature that engages in crazy competitions with other players using various paint sprays. The aim is to hit opponents with your paint sprays and temporarily knock them out of the game.
There are different versions of paint sprays, with some spraying paint spots particularly quickly, while others can still be precise over long distances. Others cover large areas with paint but can only be used slowly.
The goal is to either cover a large part of the battleground in your color after three minutes or to capture and hold certain points in the area long enough. So, it’s not only about good hand-eye coordination but also about tactics and clever approaches.
At what age is it recommended? The USK rates Splatoon from 6 years. Since it is primarily about hitting opponents with paint using quick reflexes, we share this assessment.
Why is the game good for children? Splatoon is essentially a shooter, but one that completely avoids violence. Even the “weapons” are just paint guns and other spray devices. While they may look a bit like weapons, they are brightly colored, and only paint is spilled.
The game provides the wild action of a shooter without relying on the violence often found in such games. Rather, it’s just a big colorful chaos where you can splatter paint to your heart’s content.
Hit opponents also appear back in the game shortly after being tagged, and nobody has to die. It’s basically the online equivalent of an epic water gun fight in the summer.
What should parents still pay attention to? Splatoon 2 has no hidden costs in the game. There are no microtransactions or other options to spend real money on additional content in the game. Only an expansion called “Octo Expansion” can be purchased additionally. This expands the game with an adventure that is played alone.
And even though Splatoon 2 comes across as cute and non-violent: Ensure that your children are not overwhelmed by the vibrant and somewhat chaotic events on the screen.
Are there alternatives in the genre? Another very popular shooter game among children is Fortnite. This game also relies on colorful comic graphics but is significantly more complex, as you not only shoot but can also build structures and cover. Additionally, the weapons in Fortnite actually look like weapons, and some of the characters can be quite creepy.
Moreover, Fortnite offers the option to buy alternative characters for real money. Fortnite is only recommended from the age of 12.
