Star Wars: Squadrons – Space Sim
Genre: Space Sim | Developer: EA | Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One | Release Date: October 2, 2020 | Model: Buy2Play
What kind of game is this? In Star Wars: Squadrons, you find yourself back in a pure space simulation in the Star Wars universe. Unlike the more arcade-action-oriented flight game modes in Battlefront 2, the space battles here have more depth and resemble the simulation-heavy games TIE Fighter or X-Wing Alliance from the 90s. Curiously, the air battles of World War II seem to have inspired Squadrons.
The story takes place after the end of the Emperor in Episode VI of the saga. The Empire desperately tries to hold together its slowly crumbling star empire, while the newly founded Republic steadily expands its control over the galaxy.
In a solo campaign, you play alternating pilots on the side of the Empire and the New Republic, experiencing a gripping Star Wars story. There is also a 5vs5 multiplayer mode where you compete against each other in multi-part missions.
These are the highlights of Star Wars: Squadrons
The major feature of Star Wars: Squadrons is certainly the successful Star Wars atmosphere. Thanks to the well-known ships and effects, you quickly feel deep in the action and like in a Star Wars film. The story, which we experience alternately as a pilot of the Republic or the Empire, promises exciting twists and a deeply engaging portrayal of the two factions.
Further highlights of Star Wars: Squadrons:
- Complex, strategic missions in multiplayer – In three phases, the enemy flagship must be destroyed
- Freely customizable character
- You can upgrade your ships between missions and customize them
Why should you play Star Wars: Squadrons in October?
If you have been looking forward to a new Star Wars space game since X-Wing Alliance, you should finally get back into such a game after almost 21 years. The same goes for fans of space battles in the Battlefront games. However, keep in mind that the gameplay in Squadrons has a bit more depth than in Battlefront.
Also worth mentioning: The story promises an ambivalent portrayal of the Republic and the Empire, beyond the usual clichés. Unlike the much-criticized story of Battlefront 2, your imperial pilots won’t immediately defect to the Republic after just a few missions.
