Mulholland Drive
In this film by David Lynch, an aspiring actress named Betty arrives in Hollywood to start her career. However, she meets Rita, who seems to be suffering from memory loss, in her home. Together, the two women want to find out what happened to Rita. At the same time, Betty enters the dark world of Hollywood.
Dream and reality are mixed from the very beginning. Like in Shutter Island, Betty can never be sure whether what she experiences is really happening. Even whether she truly is who she believes she is is up for debate.
Mulholland Drive is one big puzzle that leaves you with a question mark over your head. Those who engage with it will be rewarded with an incredibly exciting cinematic experience.
12 Monkeys
This is one of the best films with Bruce Willis. He plays a man named James in this film who is sent back in time to investigate the cause of a virus that has wiped out a large part of humanity.
However, things go wrong, and he ends up in a psychiatric clinic. There he meets Jeffrey, played by Brad Pitt, who tells him about the “12 Monkeys,” a secret organization.
Are they responsible for the virus? The lines between reality and fiction increasingly blur, and James can soon no longer trust his own perception. Like in Shutter Island, the protagonist finds himself in a suffocating clinic and begins to doubt his sanity.
A Cure for Wellness
Just like in Shutter Island or 12 Monkeys, this film by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) also takes place in an institution. However, it initially seems like a sanatorium for recovery and healing. The banker Lockhardt visits the place in the Swiss mountains but quickly realizes that something is not right here.
He tries to uncover the dark secret of this place. When he suddenly finds himself unable to move freely, appearing as a prisoner, the situation intensifies. The film features some disturbing imagery and is similarly claustrophobic as Shutter Island.
