2. The Raid
Release: 2012 | Directed by: Gareth Evans | Currently streaming: Amazon Prime Video (subscription)
What is The Raid about? A high-rise in Jakarta, a city in Indonesia, is controlled by a ruthless gangster boss. Now a police raid is about to happen, but an army of criminals is on site to defend the building. It results in a brutal war between the police and the gangsters.
The Raid (and also The Raid 2) have almost achieved legendary status among modern action films. The film is brutal and harsh in its violence, yet the action is breathtaking. The fight choreography is fantastic, and both the camera work and the set provide an extraordinary staging, apart from “clean” modern US films.
This is what IMDb ratings say: With over 220,000 ratings on IMDb, the film has a ranking of 7.6 out of 10 stars.
3. Sisu
Release: 2022 | Directed by: Jalmari Helander | Currently streaming: Netflix
What is Sisu about? The Finnish soldier Aatami Korpi was a legendary soldier who now lives in Lapland and peacefully searches for gold. While he wants to bring his loot to a town, he encounters a group of Nazis who want to kill him. But things turn differently and it leads to a brutal cat-and-mouse game.
Sisu is a brutal action film that more than deserves its 18+
rating. The film is dirtier and more entertaining than John Wick, but no less fun for genre fans who can watch a European representative of the action genre here.
This is what IMDb ratings say: With over 86,000 ratings on IMDb, the film has a rating of 6.9 out of 10.
