Spellweaver TCG
If you’ve had enough of Hearthstone, Spellweaver provides a good alternative. The game has been in development for 4 years. It bears some resemblance to Magic: The Gathering, but also brings its own ideas.
For instance, the combat system already has some peculiarities. The attacker has the free choice of whether to attack the opponent directly or one of their creatures. Each of them has a speed value. For an attack against another creature, the attacker must have an equal or higher speed value. For example, if the attacking creature has a value of 1, it cannot attack one with a value of 2.
The same applies to blocking. If the attacker has a value of 2, one cannot block the attack with a creature that only possesses a speed of 1.
Both mana and magical aspects are used as resources. There are 6 different magical aspects: Order, Wisdom, Nature, Corruption, Dominion, and Rage. They serve more as a type of access requirement. One pays for the card again with mana. Unlike in Hearthstone, the mana value does not rise every round; instead, corresponding cards must be played for this.
An additional interesting idea is the alternative victory condition. Players start with 20 life points and win when they raise their own to 40. Thus, extremely defensive decks also have a chance to win the game. Alternatively, the opponent’s life points or card count can be brought to 0. The playtime amounts to about 7-15 minutes per duel.
The game is currently in closed beta, and access is already available for $10. Otherwise, one can also sign up on the website and hope for free access. Keys are sent out every few days. The open beta will take place on April 24, 2015. It is set to be free to play upon release.
