Waterdeep
Waterdeep, also known as the “City of Splendors,” is justified because it is the largest, richest, and most influential metropolis on the Sword Coast, renowned for its wizards, merchants, adventurers, and the political puzzle and intrigue surrounding the anonymous “Lords’ Council.”
Waterdeep is also the access to a legendary dungeon that extends deep beneath the famous tavern, The Yawning Portal. The city offers a mix of high culture, secrets, and dark schemes and is one of the main settings in campaigns like Waterdeep: Dragon Heist or Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage.
The infamous Beholder Xanathar plays a significant role in Waterdeep. As the leader of an extensive criminal syndicate, he operates from the shadows of the city and undermines the order and safety of the metropolis with his schemes.
Although the city is known for its powerful wizards, influential noble families, and strict laws, Xanathar’s influence shows that crime thrives even in this stronghold of civilization. His paranoia, magical powers, and whimsical obsession with his goldfish Sylgar make him an unpredictable force in the urban power structure and a popular antagonist for all stories set in Waterdeep.
