Dark Souls not only had an impact on the gaming industry in general, but also brought with it its own sub-genre. Soulslikes now appear almost monthly to provide you with a similar feeling as From Software. We have compiled 5 for you to keep an eye on.
What is a Soulslike? There isn’t really a 100 percent definition of the term, but several characteristics can be named.
- Connected world with varying degrees of hidden shortcuts
- A combat system reminiscent of Dark Souls
- High difficulty level
- The certain, dark atmosphere
The following 5 games do not connect all, but several of the mentioned characteristics. For good variance, we have defined the term broadly. Feel free to write your tips for future or already released Soulslikes in the comments.
5. Lords of the Fallen
Platform: PC, Xbox Series, PS5 | Release: October 13, 2023
Not to be confused with the game of the same name from 2014, Lords of the Fallen is the sequel to the fantasy Soulslike. Lords of the Fallen wants to do everything better than its predecessor and presents itself in dark visuals.
The source of inspiration Dark Souls
is not hidden, and both visually and gameplay-wise, Lords of the Fallen could also be an official Souls title. The so-called Soul Flay is an interesting new mechanic that allows you to pull enemies over small abysses or paralyze them. This opens a new tactical depth for you while exploring the world.
4. Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn
Platform: PC, Xbox Series, PS5, PS4 | Release: 2024
A bit more colorful is Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn. The studio A44 previously developed the small Soulslike Ashen and is now attempting a significantly larger project with a large, open world full of magic and gods.
The combat system is reminiscent of Bloodborne, as you also use various melee weapons as well as firearms. Additionally, there is magic and an uncharacteristic combo system for Soulslikes, in which you try to combine and utilize all your combat options. This makes the game look even faster and more dynamic than classic Soulslikes.
