October is especially the best month of the year for horror fans. MyMMO author Linda looks forward to this time every year and has put together a small list of games for your Spooky Season
here.
Trigger Warning: This article and the listed games may contain disturbing topics such as suicide, mental illnesses, or physical, emotional, and sexual violence.
GYLT
Developer: Tequila Works | Release Date: July 6, 2023 | Rating: 97% positive | Mode: Single Player
What kind of game is this? In GYLT, you accompany little Sally, who is searching for her cousin Emily and ends up in a twisted version of the city of Maine after being chased by a group of bullies. Here, her fears and bad memories await her, which have taken on a very dark and real form.
GYLT is an adventure with puzzle, stealth, and combat mechanics and was released earlier this year on Steam.
Why this game? Even though GYLT may seem a bit childish at first glance to many, it made it onto this list not only because of its good rating on Steam.
If you watch the trailer, GYLT looks like a game that offers many aspects that make a good horror game. You can see dark, deserted alleys, threatening messages, mannequins, and strange creatures. In various situations, you sneak through the world or confront your fears in battle.
And many horror fans or simply those who know Stephen King novels will surely be convinced by the setting of Maine.
At Dead of Night
Developer: Baggy Cat Ltd. | Release Date: November 19, 2020 | Rating: 93% positive | Mode: Single Player
What kind of game is this? You play as Maya, who is trapped in a hotel with her friends. Unlike her friends, Maya can move through the hotel and must free her companions.
She is hunted by the hotel owner Jimmy Hall, who himself has a strange secret and is heavily involved in the stories of the ghosts. As Maya, you have the ability to speak with the ghosts of the hotel, and before your escape, it is your task to uncover and understand the history of the hotel and its owner.
The game is a strategic role-playing game that was released in 2020 on Steam.
Why this game? At Dead of Night may not offer creepy creatures or thrilling fights, but it is still perfect for a few creepy game nights.
In this game, you are constantly on edge because Jimmy is always after you and can be hiding around every corner and in every shadow, with you constantly hearing him call after you.
The stories you uncover are not only interesting but also quite disturbing at times. Additionally, the game is kept completely realistic. Real images of actual rooms and the actors themselves were used, instead of just a model of them. This creates an incredibly good atmosphere and an interesting gaming experience.
Scrutinized
Developer: Reflect Studios | Release Date: August 5, 2020 | Rating: 89% positive | Mode: Single Player
What kind of game is this? In Scrutinized, you take on the role of a young criminal analyst who has made it her task to uncover the crimes in the neighborhood. She does this using several programs on her computer that provide her with police records, chat histories, and personal information.
Your task is to connect this information and identify the real criminals. However, you should always keep an eye on your apartment. Because two criminals from this neighborhood have set their sights on you.
Windows or doors keep opening, the power goes out, or the security cameras pick up something. If you do not respond to these signs, your end will come quicker than you can imagine.
The game was released in 2020 on Steam.
Why this game? Scrutinized definitely caters to a different kind of horror than terrifying creatures do. But even though the game has a very simple and repetitive mechanic, it is definitely not for the faint of heart.
Not knowing what is happening behind you and the constant thought that someone could be in the house could trigger a certain paranoia in many people. Scrutinized plays very well with this, which is why it is certainly perfect for a few thrilling evenings.
Murder House
Developer: Puppet Combo | Release Date: October 23, 2020 | Rating: 96% positive | Mode: Single Player
What kind of game is this? As part of a news team, you venture into the abandoned house of an executed serial killer in search of a hot story. No one could have guessed that you would become the hunted yourself.
Did the notorious Easter Ripper expect you in his house, or is it someone else who has snatched the costume and made you his target? Whether you can escape from the house and a serial killer is up to you.
Murder House is a survival horror game that was released in 2020 on Steam.
Why this game? Murder House lets you experience what it’s like to be on the run from a serial killer. That alone makes it a good horror game. But also the story that awaits you throughout the game is quite disturbing.
Additionally, the nostalgic design of the game and many gameplay mechanics reminiscent of old PS1 classics make Murder House a special horror experience.
The Outlast Trials
Developer: Red Barrels | Release Date: May 18, 2023 | Rating: 93% positive | Mode: Online Co-op
What kind of game is this? In the time of the Cold War, you sign up as human guinea pigs for Murkoff Corp. to have methods of brainwashing and mind control tested on you.
You undergo terribly brutal, bloody, frightening, and morally questionable tests and tasks that strongly tug at your nerves. Of course, all in the name of science.
The Outlast Trials was released this year on Steam and is currently in Early Access.
Why this game? Its single-player predecessor, Outlast, is likely already one of the most well-known horror games of recent years. So it’s almost logical that The Outlast Trials also had to make it onto this list.
What makes the game interesting for horror fans is not only its graphical presentation, which looks like a perfect horror movie. Especially the fact that you can play the game with your friends is a big plus. Facing creepy and challenging situations together is not just easy but also a lot of fun.
