Class Quests
In Vanilla, each class had a few quests that were only accessible to that class. These were very specific tasks that belonged to the fantasy of the corresponding class. For example, mages had to solve arcane phenomena in an inn, while rogues needed to rob a particularly important enemy.
Although the quests only made up a small fraction of all the missions in the game, they were something special. You felt more connected to your class. You were not just the nameless heroine in Azeroth who received the same tasks as everyone else – rather, you were a mage, a priest, or a warrior needed for very specific missions.
Class quests still exist, but they have become extremely rare. The last major questline that was available only to one class concerned the warlock. In this quest, players could earn special glyphs and learned through a longer story series why races like the Lightforged Draenei could also tread the path of a warlock.
Recent developments show how incredibly important class quests can be in giving one’s character more identity in the story of Azeroth. Even though an endeavor like the order halls and the associated campaigns consumed a lot of resources, it remains one of the best things that World of Warcraft has ever produced.
A return to class quests does not currently seem likely. Aside from isolated small moments where your class has a special dialog option, we likely won’t see much of that for a while. But perhaps the feedback that Blizzard is surely receiving for Legion Remix will help us see more of this in the future.
